Details

From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:0.9.7) Gecko/20011221 BuildID: 2001122106 Although a username and password for a News server Account is stored in the Password Manager, Mail/News continues to prompt for authentication each time Mozilla is run and the Account is accessed. Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Create a News account that requires authentication 2. Access the Account and enter the username and password when prompted to do so, being sure to indicate that they should be stored in the Password Manager 3. Quit Mozilla and restart 4. Access the News Account again Actual Results: Mozilla prompted for username and password entry again, ignoring the Password Manager entries. Expected Results: Mozilla should have used the entries from the Password Manager. Mozilla will sometimes even do this without having to quit. Mozilla will sometimes prompt for username/password authentication for *each group* on the server the user tries to access! Insanity! This has been going on for a long time, as well; at least a year. This is probably an All/All problem, but I'll leave that to confirmers.

Greg, thanks for this excellent report. Please see http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78356#c9 and verify this is a DUP if you and I think the same thing. (read all the comments, actually). *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 78356 ***

Stephen, I, too, have noticed that Password Manager will try to store username/password pairs for individual newsgroups. However, on first connect, it does seem to correctly store a pair for the server in general; that is, news://username@host/#username and news://username@host/#password. The problem may be, then, that Mail/News is failing to detect this stored pair and seeking to authenticate individual newsgroups. What do you think?
Greg, yes. Also, see bug 108376. Seth knows what's going on here, and will fix it when he has allotted time. (this bug is _so_ annoying).
