Tested on Windows 7 x64 with the Aurora 46.0a2 build and Nightly 45.0a1 build. I can't reproduce the problem.

Can you please provide some reproduction steps? Did it happen with a new profile? On which website? Do you have any other details that could help me reproduce the issue? If you can, please also provide a screenshot.

when observed it's as simple as starting to drag any image (no particular drop target needed), even one directly opened via file:// URI and observing the browser console. But it's intermittened and I only generally take a look at the console after bug 1226040 has manifested, so maybe it's related, maybe not.

I tried to reproduce the issue from bug 1226040. I can't reproduce either of the problems on Aurota 46.0a2 and Nightly 47.0a1 with a new profile. 
Based on your comment, I think it is something specific to your profile settings. Can you provide a list  of the addons you have installed? You can find it in about:support under Extensions.
Does this issue repoduce in Safe Mode? 
Does this issue reproduce with e10s disabled?

I already provided that information as part of bug 1226040.

And as I said, it's intermittend, I only notice it sometimes during longer browsing sessions, so I don't know why you expect it to be immediately reproducible.

I suspect it's some sort of glitch in some internal state occurring due to how drag and drop is handled in e10s.
