User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0
Build ID: 20160303134406
Steps to reproduce:
Firefox released version 45.0 (Firefox *32 in task manager)
"Firefox is up to date"
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
Preferences -> Privacy -> History ( Change to NEVER remember history)
Restart firefox
Attempt to watch Netflix.
Netflix won't show and displays Error Code: F7053-1803
Actual results:
Re-Enabling history setting to default "Remember History", then restarting firefox fixes the error.
Expected results:
Possible cause: Firefox may be "deleting history on the fly" or "not recording history at all"
Returning to "Delete history on startup" or "Delete history on exit" method would fix the problem for a "Never remember history" setting to be compatible with current Netflix.
Is it reproducible with a fresh profile and the same history settings?

Hi Blank,
I have tested this issue on the latest Firefox (45.0) release, latest Nightly (48.0a1 - Build ID: 20160314030215) build and I have managed to reproduce it. I have followed your provided steps and set the browser to "Never Remember History". The videos from Netflix does not start and an error shows up "Netflix Error F7053-1803" (see attachement). This is the page that Netflix help you to resolve the issue: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/32660. I am not sure if this is a Firefox bug or this is how Netflix page is implemented . I will assign a component to it, maybe someone with more experience could share an opinion related to it.
Thanks,
Cosmin

Component: Untriaged → Private Browsing
"Never Remember History" is equivalent to the permanent private browsing. And now with PB mode, tracking protection is enabled.
Cosmin, as you have access to Netflix, can you test these 3 situations:
1) Set "Remember History" and enable tracking protection (about:config>privacy.trackingprotection.enabled=true)
2) Set "Accept third-party cookies: Never" (without tracking protection enabled)
3) with some old versions like 40 or 42, set "Never Remember History" (to know if there is a regression)

Hi Loic,
This are the results for those three situations:
1. With this configuration I was able to watch videos on Netflix without any errors.
2. With this configuration I was able to watch videos on Netflix without any errors.
3. I have tested with Firefox 44.0.1 release and any video from Netflix does not start and the same error shows up "Netflix Error F7053-1803". I have also tested with Firefox 39.0 release and for watching videos on Netflix I had to update the Silverlight Application (see attachment). After the update, playing a video shows this new "Error Code: N8010" (see attachment).

We should see if bug 1254856 makes a difference after it is fixed.

Oh, comment 4 makes it sound like tracking protection may be at fault here.

Netflix needs IndexedDB, which doesn't work in Private Browsing mode (bug 781982). Does IndexedDB work in "Never Remember History" mode?
Depends on: 781982
Comment 10•9 years ago

Bug 1150647 comment 7 says "Never Remember History" is the same as saying "Always use Private Browsing Mode". In that case, I think we can dupe this bug to bug 1150647.
This is a problem with IndexedDB (bug 781982), not Tracking Protection.

Fix:
About:Config
media.mediasource.enabled
Right click on it.
Set it to false.
Refresh Netflix page with error.
It should start playing.
My info:
Firefox
Version 47.0
Build ID 20160604131506
I started to get this error after reimaging my system and installing a fresh copy of Firefox.
All options including on the help page of Netflix failed. It was not a history issue. It was not a cache or db issue.

(In reply to Chris Peterson [:cpeterson] from comment #12)
> Jesse, are you running in Private Browsing Mode?
Hey there Chris.
Private browsing mode was not enabled, & history was set to remember.
Steps i attempted to use to resolve my issue:
Obviously attempted to follow the instructions as set by Netflix
Self knowledge steps:
1 -
Navigated to: C:\users\$username\AppData\local\Mozilla -> Deleted all data including profiles.
Reopened Firefox, App opened as if from a fresh install & created new profile data.
Attempted to use Netflix.
Same error.
2 -
Uninstalled silverlight
Rebooted the pc.
Installed silverlight
Rebooted pc.
Attempted firefox Netflix.
Same issue
3 -
Uninstalled java.
Rebooted the pc.
Installed java.
Rebooted pc.
Attempted firefox netflix.
Same issue.
4 -
Via firefox, disabled DRM.
Attempted netflix show/movie.
Firefox message: DRM required.
Selected Enable.
Firefox attempted to install DRM & addons associated.
Closed firefox.
Reopened firefox.
Attempted netflix show/movie.
Same issue.
5 -
Variation of 4, but disabled the individual plugs separately.
- Primetime Content Decryption Module provided by Adobe Systems, Incorporated.
- Widevine content decryption module profided by google inc.
After i set one to never activate, I closed firefox, reopened firefox & attempted netflix again.
Same issue. Re-enabled the one first disabled, then disabled the second. Same deal.
6 -
From Netflix, Hit Shift + ctrl + K - Console
Used the following commands:
localStorage
localStorage.removeItem("~~~itemid~~~")
Closed browser.
Reopened to netflix show.
Same issue.
Console again
localStorage
localStorage.clear()
Closed browser.
Reopened to netflix show.
Same issue.
7 -
At this point, I am frustrated. As anyone would be. Typical options and those found online have not worked to resolve the issue. So i did what anyone who knows PC's would do.
Uninstalled firefox.
Rebooted.
Reinstalled firefox.
Attempted to launch netflix show.
Same issue.
8 -
Getting really frustrated at this point.
Possible profile issue?
Possible registry issue?
This is a fresh PC image after all.
So finally I log off of the pc, use administrative access & logged in under the admin id.
Deleted my own profile.
Cleared the registry keys associated with that profile in all sections.
Uninstalled firefox.
Cleared the registry keys associated with that program in all sections.
Rebooted the PC.
Created a new profile.
Installed a fresh copy of Firefox.
Rebooted again.
Ensured all windows updates were installed.
System was up to date on everything.
Launched firefox.
Attempted to go to the netflix show.
Same issue.
~~~~~~~~~~ Note ~~~~~~~~~~
At this point I am super ticked off. As a professional I.T. Analyst everything I have tried I would do on a clients PC within the corporate environment. On a personal level, I have gone and violated about a dozen different corporate policies to try and get this working using every trick I can think of and even using as many sources online as possible. Even going as far as pulling older builds from 40 on up and our corporate build which is 37. But still nothing was working.
So I am sitting here, wondering just what am i missing here. Obviously it is a HTML5 issue. But youtube is working without issue. No flash is in the addons section. And obviously the 'Primetime Content Decryption Module provided by Adobe Systems, Incorporated' is the replacement for flash. So what was i missing?
~~~~~~~~~~ End Note ~~~~~~~~~~
9 -
So figure, HTML 5 Issue?
I head over to https://html5test.com/
Every thing checks out. 31/35
video element was Yes.
Subtitles was Yes.
Audio track selection was No.
Video track selection was No.
Poster images was Yes.
Codec detection was Yes.
Advanced -
DRM support was Yes.
Media Source extensions was Yes.
Codecs -
MPEG-4 ASP support was No. <- Note: DivX - src https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DivX
H.264 support was Yes.
Ogg Theora support was Yes.
WebM with VP8 support was Yes.
WebM with VP9 support was Yes.
At this point I am confused. HTML5 is working. Working fine on other sites as well, Event went to http://www.quirksmode.org/html5/tests/video.html and tested. Everything is working.
So what in heavens name is the issue?
~~~~~~~~~~ Investigation and Final Solution ~~~~~~~~~~
At this point, I am super confused. Netflix is supposed to be working, everything checks out. The one and only thing I have not looked at is this thing called Media Source extensions.
I investigate. Wiki, Netflix, Youtube. Via netflix - http://techblog.netflix.com/2013/04/html5-video-at-netflix.html
Ok, so Firefox is supposed to have this thing enabled. Webchecks show it is, but where is it located?
Further investigation and research brought me to the Firefox - About:Config
I decide... Sure. Why not. I have nothing left to loose at this point.
I do a search for mediasource
I get the following results and their values.
1a) media.mediasource.enabled - True
2b) media.mediasource.mp4.enabled - True
3c) media.mediasource.webm.audio.enabled - True
4d) media.mediasource.webm.enabled - True
So i do the typical techy thing. Shrug, Say well lets see what happens and I start playing with the values and refreshing Netflix that is in a different tab after each change.
All False - No change.
Individually set 1 to false and refresh Netflix. - No Change - Repeated process for all 4 with same results.
Ok. Soo..... Typical tech head scratching at this point. So figured, what the heck. Lets try a combination of either 2 or 3 either enabled or disabled.
(note: per number/letter combo beside the options noted above are to make it simple to type & read.)
So i tried 1a & 2b and set them to disabled while 3c & 4d were enabled.
refreshed netflix.
No change.
Tried 2b & 3c to disabled while 1a & 4d were enabled.
refreshed netflix.
No change.
Tried 3c & 4d to disabled while 1a & 2b were enabled.
refreshed netflix.
No change.
Tried 3c & 1a to disabled while 4d & 2b were enabled.
refreshed netflix.
No change.
Tried 4d & 2b to disabled while 3c & 1a were enabled.
refreshed netflix.
No change.
And finally I tried 1a & 4d to disabled while 2b & 3c were enabled.
refreshed netflix.
BOOM! Video started playing.
So to get Netflix in Firefox to work:
media.mediasource.enabled MUST be set to False
&
media.mediasource.webm.enabled MUST be set to False
I hope this explains everything I tried before finding the final solution. Forgot to add the second item that needed to be disabled in my first response, my bad.
Also, I did pass this onto the Netflix support staff so they are aware.
I also want to add, When I set both of those to false, I did attempt other sites that use HTML5, including youtube videos, news sites & others. All videos are working without issue, and appears the lag issue is fixed as well and the browser does not lock up like it did before.
Comment 16•9 years ago
|
||
After further testing I have found that LIVE streams do not work unless those options are enabled.
And that is perfectly fine with me.
Additional testing has also revealed that I am now 100% ad free on multiple sites including Youtube, and browser performance has improved, plus memory usage has been cut in half.
I can only point to MPEG DASH as the culprit for all my issues. Including ad injections into videos it is also used on multiple sites to provide floating, rotating advertisements.
LoL. Problems fixed. No more advertisements. No more performance issues. Videos load super fast.
> media.mediasource.enabled MUST be set to False
If you set the media.mediasource.enabled pref to false, then Netflix will use Microsoft's Silverlight plugin instead of HTML5 video (using Adobe Primetime). Netflix's HTML5 video should have worked "out of the box" with a clean Firefox profile without needing to install Silverlight or reconfigure any about:config prefs. So I'm not sure what's going on.
If you post your about:support info in this bug, we might find more information about the error:
I have the same issue now after starting a firefox nightly for testing.
Netflix shows error code: F7053-1803 even with standard firefox 47.0.1 with empty profile.
1) Set history to remember
2) Cleared browser cache
Setting media.mediasource.enabled=false works using silverlight plugin.
