Open Bug 1258117 Opened 10 years ago Updated 2 years ago

Word 97 attachments do not open from email compose window in Linux PCLOS. Both the System and Thunderbird are set to open with LibreOffice. However, .doc attachments open OK from received emails. PDFs open OK.

How many attachments was this tested with? What is the mime type of that attached file in an affected email?
Flags: needinfo?(js)
I tried it with several different attachments. They were all Word documents (MS Word version Office 97). Sorry, I am not too technical and I don't know how to find the mime type. You can correspond with me at js@jsnyc.com. I also do not know how to work this bug report system and may miss something. Jonathan Slaff

I found this in "all headers" of email: MIME-Version 1.0 Does this answer your question?
What I mean in the preceding note is: I sent the attachment to myself and looked for MIME information in the email header. It said MIME-Version 1.0. I hope that answers what you were asking.
I have now discovered that I can click to open Libreoffice document attachments from the email compose window, but not MS Office 97 documents. Is there some "open with" setting that I have to make?
I should add that in Edit-->Preferences-->Attachments-->Incoming, I am set to open MS Word documents in Libreoffice 5.1 and Excel 2007 Spreadsheets in Libre Office 5.1 Calc. Is there a separate setting for outgoing attachments?

Raal, are you able to test this issue?

@Jonathan can you attach your Word 97 files for test?

I cannot reproduce the issue with .doc file (created in LibreOffice):

  • open new email
  • add .doc attachment
  • I can open attachment from unsent e-mail
  • sent email to mailaddress
  • I can open .doc file from email preview and from opened e-mail

Steve, is this something you can test?

Wayne, can only test with OpenSUSE Leap 15.3.
On 96.0a1 (2021-12-04) (64-bit).
When Edit > Settings are set to open with Libreoffice for word documents .doc files open in all cases as in comment 8.
When Edit > Settings are set to always ask, they do not open when open with Libreoffice is selected, but this is a carryover from bug 1741820

Reminds me of bug 1698140, but this bug 1258117 probably too old to be related.

OS: Unspecified → Linux

Severity: normal → S3

The OP describes an issue where opening an attachment on newly composed mail fails while opening an attachment on received mail succeeds. I am not able to confirm this behavior.

However, using Thunderbird 102.6.0 on Debian 5.10, I'm able to confirm comment 10: opening always fails when the appropriate mime types are configured to always ask and opening always succeeds when the appropriate mime types are configured to always open in LibreOffice.

Because my issue is not related to the composer, I've opened related bug 1815319.

Tested with TB 122.0a1 (2023-12-01) (64-bit) and LibreOffice 7.3.7, Ubuntu 22.04 and it works for me. Tested .doc and .odt file, settings are set to Always ask and I can open file with LibreOffice.
