Hmm simple change at first glance but do we want this without a gui option to turn it on/off?

Good point. Firefox puts their UI in their downloads panel.

The backend of our download manager is still the C++ implementation.
Neil was working on a move to using the new JS downloads backend.

We should put this on hold, or better still make this depend on bug 888915
