User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0
Build ID: 20160511223818
Steps to reproduce:
Running on Ubuntu 16.04
1. Open any email; More->Save as... (save the email to a .eml file)
2. File->Open Saved Message (and pick the saved .eml file)
3. While viewing the saved email, File->Print
Actual results:
1. A recursive thunderbird run is started on the saved .eml file
2. The printout is empty
Expected results:
The email (opened from saved .eml) should print
TB 45.0 has exactly the same bug.
OS: Unspecified → Linux
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
Version: 38 Branch → 45 Branch
What about 45.1? We fixed a similar bug 1265126.
Printing (to a pdf file) seems to work fine for me on Linux.
I use Ubuntu 16.04 and the only versions I have access to are 38.x (in the normal distribution)
and whatever is in ppa:mozillateam/thunderbird-next which currently is 45.0
Would you please try to "Steps to reproduce" yourself in the later version and post whether the bug is there or not. Thanks.
Yes, I tried it on 45.1 and 49 and it worked fine.
After your step 3. I got the printer chooser dialog, I chose "print to file" (I think a KDE feature), chose PDF and saved the file. I displayed the pdf file and it contained the text of the message.
What do you mean by "A recursive thunderbird run is started on the saved .eml file" ?
Do you get the printer selection dialog?
For me (using 45.0), at step 3 (More->Print on a reloaded .eml file), the print dialog appears and simultaneously a pop-up similar to Firefox which asks "What should Thunderbird do with this file?"
=> Please see attached screenshot
This smells like an integration glitch with Firefox and/or Ubuntu.
You click Print in the printer selection dialog and it then shows that Open test2.eml dialog?
Does it also do that if you choose the "Print to File" printer as I did?
> You click Print in the printer selection dialog and it then shows that Open test2.eml dialog?

The Open dialog appears, simultaneous with the Print dialog, when I do either
Click "More" in the TB eindow, then "Print..."
or
Click "File" in Ubuntu's window header, then "Print..."
(This happens only on a TB window showing a reopened .eml file, not on a message in my inbox)
Sorry, didn't answer your question directly. It makes no difference what I select in the Print dialog, the TB Open dialog appears before a printer can be selected (FWIW, I too selected 'print to file', and the resulting pdf was a blank page).

Can you please upgrade to TB 45. TB 38 has come to the end of its life-cycle.
