News was working fine for me, up until about the middle of February, then, in recent builds (For example I am currently using 2002022703), it stopped working. If I open mail-news and go to my news account, the throbber spins for some time, then eventually I get a pop-up error saying "A News (NNTP) error occured: /1.0 408 Request Time-out". I can get a slightly more helpful error by typing a URL like news://news.mozilla.org/ into the location bar of a browser window. When I do that, the browser window displays a page saying: ============================================ ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved While trying to retrieve the URL: news://news.mozilla.org/ The following error was encountered: * Invalid URL Some aspect of the requested URL is incorrect. Possible problems: * Missing or incorrect access protocol (should be `http://'' or similar) * Missing hostname * Illegal double-escape in the URL-Path * Illegal character in hostname; underscores are not allowed Generated Wed, 27 Feb 2002 17:17:06 GMT by roeburn.open.ac.uk (Squid/2.2.STABLE5) ============================================ roeburn.open.ac.uk is the web proxy chache where I work. Raj Bhaskar <raj_bhaskar@hotmail.com> reported this bug in the Mozillazine forums: http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback/read.php?f=4&i=1160&t=1160. He is behind Squid/2.4.STABLE3. Various people in that forum have reported WFM, but presumably they are not behind a proxy. I assume that the bug is that a news URL is causing Mozilla to contact the HTTP proxy, so this bug may actually belong in another, lower level networking component, but since I am not sure I will leave it to a competent triager to find the right home for this bug.

I assume that you're using proxy auto config. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 128064 ***

Not sure why this was marked a dup of a dup... http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=128045 seems to be the real bug. re-opening to correct.

Because that bg is the real one and the other one is INVALID - I was going to fix it up when I got hope this afternoon. Doesn't really matter though
verified dup, since i haven't heard back I'll be the assumption was indeed correctly made.

Quite right, and and now that the dup (of the dup) has been fixed, I can read news again. Many thanks. (Well, perhaps not, I was getting so much work done while I couldn't read news.)
