Currently, Firefox for Android uses the ch.boye http library. This is outdated, replacing it with the official maintained version would be good.
This is what is officially recommended by apache. https://hc.apache.org/httpcomponents-client-4.5.x/android-port.html

This doesn't make sense, since cz.msebera only targets API 23+, and Fennec is (currently) 15+.

I suggest you focus on removing Sync entirely from Orfox.  If you want to help Fennec, invest in migrating httpclientlib to HttpUrlConnection, as has happened elsewhere in the App.

As I said earlier, you should focus on removing Sync (and Firefox Accounts) from the Tor version: Bug 1314778.  That code is fairly well factored and shouldn't be impossible to remove.

My guess is that you will need to do significantly more research to do this correctly.  There's ch.boye and HttpURLConnection and whatever else our code and the code in mobile/android/thirdparty does too.

rnewman, can you link to any other tickets about supporting proxies in background services code?
