As a guess, this sounds like known problems of ghost-entries when working
with mailing lists: deleting ghost-duplicate from mailing list deletes the
real contact, then left with none.
Is that listed in https://mzl.la/3HkuysL ?
And does the problem still occur, in any form, in version 102?

The problem I was thinking about at the time was bug 758969, which I've recently closed wfm. The only remaining known incarnation of that is my bug 1799368, which isn't this case.

No, from a quick check on the rather fuzzy steps of comment 0, this bug doesn't happen in TB 102.5.1.
Anyway, whatever this was would have to be refiled with clean steps against 102.
