1. Launch Netscape
2. go to http://www.yahoo.co.jp
3. Click "Chat"
4. Login with your Yahoo ID.
5. Click one of the categories on the list.
>> Applet starts loading. After the chat interface is fully displayed, enter
DBCS in the input box.
Result:
Small window appears at the upper left and it is unable to enter DBCS directly
in the input box (Not inline mode).
Expected:
It should be able to enter DBCS directly in the box.
Tested 3-11 trunk build (JRE 1.3.1).

Teruko... Does the same failure occur with JRE 1.4?

I could reproduce this in JRE 1.4.
This one seems to be related to 142384, also a yahoo chat bug.
Re-assign to Java plugin group.

I did some test on this:
07-02 branch build / WinME-JA -either 1.4.0_01 or 1.4.1-beta:
The candidate window is in left top of the window, but I can input Japanese
properly.
07-02 branch build / linux RH7.2-JA with jre1.3.2 and 06-28 branch build /
RH7.2-JA with jre1.4.1-beta:
Can not reproduce this problem.
06-28 branch build / WinXP-SimpChinese, Chinese input has no problem, but when I
tried to input Japanese characters, then I saw this - candidate window in the
left top of window, and Japanese characters won't show in input line.
So, what I'm guess problem here is on non-native Japanese OS.

Yuying, this is the problem about IME inline mode on Java applet in Win32 system.
This happens on Japanese OS.
I tried the test case. Since I don't understand Japanese, instead of going to
yahoo.co.jp, I went to yahoo.com, and followed the rest of the steps. The result
seemed to be worse: after loading the chat applet, the subwindow was closed
without any error (showing in java console). That problem may be related to
other yahoo chat bugs. I tried the test case in Windows XP with JRE 1.4.1 beta,
and Solaris with JRE 1.4.1 with an IME window patch. In both cases, the
subwindow disappeared after loading the chat applet.

Joe:
This is due to a bug in Socks client I believe you are using. If you test it
outside of Sun, the applet won't crash.
Bugtraq(Sun internal bug track system) 4745833 filed for this bug.

yuying/momoi: is this a gereneral input issue, or is this specific to input into
a java applet.

This is specific to input Japanese characters into a java applet.

Sun has closed this bug as a problem in the applet. Here is the
evaluation provided...
The synopsis and the problem description were not as the same in bugzilla's
original problem. The user *can* input Japanese in the input field, but cannot
perform input method conversion inline (on-the-spot).
This is due to the Yahoo! chat applet itself, as it creates its own input field
by extending the java.awt.Canvas class. By default, Java provides passive input
method support to any components, which means root window style input
conversion. This is the expected behavior.
To enable inline input method conversion, Yahoo! chat applet should either use
java.awt.TextField class, or implement on-the-spot conversion itself.

It's still broken if they search for Firefox.
It's just wrong to use Firefox for User Agent sniffing. see http://geckoisgecko.info/
