Firefox doesn't play well with the OS X desktop session restore feature, which saves and restores open windows and documents across a system restart, whether manually triggered or during an OS update: Apple Menu -> "Restart..." Check "Reopen windows when logging back in" and reboot Expected behaviour: An open Firefox instance should reappear with its tabs restored Actual behaviour: No Firefox. Sometimes it seems Firefox doesn't even shut down cleanly, so even after a manual Firefox restart you get the "Well, this is embarrassing" session restore tab. This is not a new bug, but I couldn't find an existing bug to dupe it to, so I'm filing it just in case.

From bug 1458149 comment 0: When restarted automatically on OS X (via the "Reopen windows when logging back in" option), we should restore the user's session even if the restore session option is not set. Bug 603903 part 2 does this for Windows, we should use some of the same mechanism here. See bug 603903 comment 37 for how the auto-restart situation can be detected.

This hit me twice in the last two weeks when macOS unexpectedly had to restart. Firefox is the only program not starting again and, as described above, shows the session restore screen (albeit found no FF crash report).

I'd like to back up comment https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1326181#c9 and encourage increasing the severity.

I personally find it super frustrating every time I restart the computer (including OS updates). And I do roll my eyes a bit that we don't have parity here.

From an org perspective as well, if we want people to be using Firefox having it open and ready to go makes that, faster, easier, and so more likely.

This will be addressed by bug 639707.
