User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:50.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/50.0 Build ID: 20161208153507 Steps to reproduce: OS is W10-64 residing on a Toshiba Satellite C75D laptop, and using Windows Defender antivirus. Problem began occurring since upgrading to perhaps Thunderbird 45 several months ago. I'm currently using TB 51.0b2 and "hang" problem remains. When writing a message, TB will hang from 30 to 50 seconds. When hang is released, I'm only able to write again for perhaps 30 seconds before the hang occurs again. During the "hang" period, the rotating ring is displayed in addition to the top menu bar stating "non-responsive". Actual results: Diagnostic steps: After reading W10 blogs, I first added the TB "Profiles" folders as an exception in Windows Defender to no avail. I also deleted all .msf files to rid them of possible corruption. I then placed TB in safe-mode; however, hang problem remained. Expected results: There should be NO hangs while typing messages in Thunderbird.

This is a different system than mentioned in Bug 1315111? Does problem reproduce with BOTH Windows and TB in safe mode at same time?

Hello, Wayne Apologize for the delay. As you instructed, I switched to W10 Safe Mode with Networking-only, and just completed a thorough email writing test as you requested. From Safe Mode, I did not attempt to place TB in Safe Mode; I just opened it, activate Write, and started writing a message. I wrote a long email message of several paragraphs (that took about 40 minutes. I'm happy to report that there were NO hangs; NONE, NADA. From this test, I hope you can now identify the problem, and provide instruction on what else I might test to narrow our options.
Thanks for testing safe mode. Not seeing the problem in Windows safe mode implies there is not a bug in Thunderbird, but rather something else is causing your problem. On typical example is antivirus. https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues Feel free to post more information when you determine the cause.

After excluding "C:\Users\F16JetJock\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles" in Windows Defender, I still experienced hangs while writing email messages. Consequently, as you suggested, I studied the blogs regarding AV products compatible with TB. Since AVG apparently is one that appeared to be compatible, I decided to install and try it. It was the solution I needed. In the first test of writing several paragraphs in a message, there were no hangs. Yay! Many thanks for your help that led to a solution.
