Steps to reproduce:

daily 64 bit 
disabled and removed all addons no change
accepted the daily updates no change


Actual results:

 printing  emails produces no output
tried print preview
application locks using cpu or preview completes displaying 47  pages of a repeated pattern (see attached file)


Expected results:

1 page of visible printing/display

Print preview works fine for me on Windows in 54.0a1 (2017-02-03) (64-bit). Which build are you using? And which platform?

Thank you for quick response

Running Windows 7 pro on an AMD laptop currently 54.0a1 (2017-02-10) (64-bit) but have had same results for previous versions
Have installed Lightning Have tried with it disabled; no change; could the install have done damage?

Thunderbird  45.7.0(32 bit) works OK on same laptop

Does it happen with all messages? Like an e-mail from Bugzilla? I can preview that just fine.

Have you tried with all add-ons disabled? See Help menu. I'm on 54.0a1 (2017-02-10) (64-bit) now.

Yes all messages
Yes all addons disabled

print preview of your last (Does it happen email) produces 65 pages of the pattern
it appears that print preview of longer emails produce more pages of the pattern

do you want me to try deleting daily and reinstall?

Yes all messages
Yes all addons disabled

With recent updates "print preview" now works ok

Better would be, does it happen in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird
(but it will probably still fail)

Is it still failing for current nightly build?

Latest 64 bit 54.0a1 Still failing to  print and generating multiple pages (example 300 byte email generates 24 pages none of which are printed) 

32 bit version 5.8.0 prints happily on same machine

I have not been able to test in safe mode as the spooler service fails to start in safe mode; I am investigating

Can I produce a diagnostic of any kind to enable you to solve this problem?

We haven't done anything in Thunderbird code since the printing comes from Mozilla core code.
But I'm happy to close the bug, thanks for letting us know.

I hope we can also settle bug 1353625 real soon now.

With latest updates Thunderbird 52.0.1 (32-bit) Print Preview of a  1 page email 
now produces many pages of an identical pattern 

The pattern is identical to that produced earlier in   daily 54.0a1

I can send a file with a screen print of the pattern
I have not discovered how to attach a file to a bug report
