User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0
Build ID: 20170219190720
Steps to reproduce:
got a pgp-encrypted emssage from a friend
Actual results:
just read :
subject: Encrypted Message
until I decrypted it (by putting my password into the appropriate window)
Expected results:
I'd like that Thunderbird hides the subject too in the SMTP Header

Patrick, can you please comment here. As far as I know, headers, including the subject, are not encrypted.

SMTP by default does not allow to encrypt headers. However, we recently defined an extension to RFC 3156 (PGP/MIME), which replaces the subject with a standard text (such as "Encrypted Message") and places the original header into the MIME tree of the encrypted message [1].
Enigmail supports this for PGP/MIME messages since v1.9 (off by default for new messages); the feature will be enabled by default with the next major version of Enigmail

I do have 1.9.*1* here, which at least supports reading such mails, but sending with this new feature is not possible, or ?

It is possible. You have to customize your toolbar and add the button "Protect Subject" (no icon assigned to it). There is also a hidden preference to turn the feature on by default.

(In reply to Patrick Brunschwig from comment #4)
Under Gentoo and 45.0.7 there's no appropriate menu item to select - is this a Gentoo bug ?

There's no appropriate menu item here (enigmail 1.9.1)

As protecting the subject is part of message sending (not receiving), you have to customize the toolbar of the message composition window, not the message reading window...
I.e. start writing a new mail and then customize the menu.
