I experience this sometimes when the network is flaky. The page loads indefinitely, if you stop the loading the URL is turned to "" (when you opened the tab via middle click) or about:blank (when you opened the tab and typed the URL).
This is a pain because for example if you have opened multiple tabs via middle click and they are not loaded, you will lose some URLs.
