STR:
1) set dom.ipc.plugins.forcedirect.enabled to true
2) sign into http://live.nicovideo.jp/ and click on a live video thumbnail
3) right click on flash and select settings
See screenshot. The settings dialog is hard to read and it doesn't react to mouse input.

I had disabled flash acceleration through flash's settings dialog, that was the cause.
STR:
1) right click a flash player and select settings. disable acceleration and restart.
2) sign into http://live.nicovideo.jp/ and click on a live video thumbnail
3) right click on flash and select settings
(or)
3) click the gears icon on the lower right, the menu that pops up displays transparent
Summary: Forcing direct mode in flash breaks settings dialog on live.nicovideo.jp → Disabling acceleration in flash breaks flash settings dialog on live.nicovideo.jp

Note this web site requests wmode=direct, which might explain why turning flash acceleration off breaks some of the content. This is definitely a flash bug and hopefully corner case since most users don't fiddle with flash settings.

They're aware of the issue: http://blog.nicovideo.jp/niconews/28539.html
According to the users, since Firefox 55, not only the Flash settings but also comments beside videos will become white, like this: https://twitter.com/appie_11/status/901681643982733312

It's not a corner case as more and more people are now talking about this on Twitter. Looks like the acceleration is disabled by default on the player. Here's their blog post on how to enable it: http://blog.nicovideo.jp/niconews/ni039996.html

Someone tweeted yesterday how to solve the issue by flipping the async drawing pref in about:config

For this site, people are reporting another issue when Flash hardware acceleration is *enabled*. The announcement text above the video will be misplaced if they switch to another Firefox tab and back to the video site's tab. I guess it's a painting bug Jim is already working on. Here are some screenshots:

definitely looks related. FYI adobe is now looking at both the unaccelerated text render bug and the tab switch issue. So far we haven't found issues with firefox.
