User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:45.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/45.0 Build ID: 20170301181722 Steps to reproduce: Upgrade 45.8esr to 52.0 using Mozilla x86_64/thunderbird-52.0.tar.bz2 and x86_64/thunderbird-45.8.0.tar.bz2 on openSuSE/Leap 42.2 (fully updated) Actual results: GTK+2 Theme is completely ignored by Tbird 52.0. Downgrade to 45.8esr breaks lightning as 5.4 is not supported by 45.8 and completely disables lightning in install. Expected results: GTK+2 theme choice should be respected in 52.0 and downgrade to 45.8 should NOT disable Lightning plugin.

GTK3 is required for TB52. See https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/52.0/system-requirements/ You unfortunately got updated because proper rules were not in place. This is being addressed by bug 1353616 > Downgrade to 45.8esr breaks lightning as 5.4 is not supported by 45.8 and completely disables lightning > in install. This has always been the case with Lightning because Lightning has binary components which must match to the version of Thunderbird. If you downgrade Thunderbird then you must get the proper version of Lightning.

Further to the previous comment. You need to uninstall Lightning 5.4 and reinstall Lightning 4.7.8. I'm closing this bug since it mixes two issues which are covered elsewhere.
