This was a deliberate change. I'm marking this as a duplicate of the report claiming this interferes with using the scrollbars in maximized mode, which seems to be the place where people are commenting with reasons besides personal preference as to why the sidebar should be on the other side. There's also bug 1358854 to add an option about where the sidebar opens.
