Devices (Tablets only):
-Asus ZenPad 8.0 Z380KL (Android 6.0.1)
-Huawei MediaPad M2 (Android 5.1.1)
-Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 (Android 5.1) - x86
-Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 - Android 4.4.2
Build: Nightly 55.0a1 (2017-05-11);
Steps to reproduce:
1. Install 2-3 web apps.
2. Open one.
3. Check Nightly.
4. Open the second web app.
5. Check Nightly: a tab appears with the first web app.
6. Open other web apps and repeat.
7. Close the web apps. Check the tabs in Nightly.
Expected result:
Web apps shouldn't open tabs in the browser.
Actual result:
A tab is created in the browser when there are at least 2 web apps opened. The tab shows the penultimate web app opened.
The web app pops up when you tap the tab.
Closing the web apps makes the tabs unresponsive, can't be tapped/closed.

I removed the tablets tag as I noticed today a similar behavior to Bug 1355824 on phones too. When you open a web app (with Nightly running), then tap the Nightly icon from the home screen, there are tabs added for each web app and the counter is adding the number of web apps, not actual tabs. I believe this is the same issue.
Summary: Web Apps - (Tablets) Tabs appear in the browser when there are multiple webapps opened → Web Apps - Tabs appear in the browser when there are multiple webapps opened

cannot reproduce using PixelXL.
I see the tab icon flashes really shortly but the count is correct.

That is right, I couldn't reproduce that today either. But the issue from the description, it's still happening on tablets, on the latest Nightly.

We keep it as P1 though it impacts on tablet which affects less users.
It will not block shipping PWA standalone mode to 55 beta if given a conditional pass.
We can fix during beta cycle if we miss the merge day
