User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/58.0.3029.110 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: 1. Create new imap email account. (ideally on 1and1, because they are using the folder Spam for their server side junk filter) 2. Activate junk filter with using the "Junk" folder within the account as junk target 3. Ensure all imap folders are synced 4. in my install TB has the folder Junk and Spam flagged as Junk folder 5. Changing the junk setting to use the "Spam" folder only this folder is flagged as junk folder. 6. Changing the junk setting back to use the "Junk" folder will have again the folder "Junk" and "Spam" identified as junk folders. Actual results: With the Spam folder identified as a junk folder emails which are placed by 1and1 into this folder will not be processed by the TB junk mail mechanism. The TB junk heuristic is not picking up on this folder. Also when manually flagging the mail is not moved to the "Junk" folder. Using the FolderFlag extension was able to disable the junk identification in version 53, but now it is immediately reverted when collapsing and expanding the folder hirachy. Expected results: Only one folder should be identified as junk target. The "Spam" folder in my setup should not be marked as junk folder.
For got to mention: one of my folder shows the desired behaviour marked with the green arrows and works as expected. All others are showing up like the one marked with the red arrows.
Well, that was actually my thread where we concluded that this most likely is a bug. Bruce testing on 52.1.1 revealed that he could use FolderFlags to remove the junk setting from the "Spam" foler.

After your repairs, have you seen this issue again in subsequent updates?

I believe we still may have problems in this area, see e.g. bug 809428. That one is about folder flags being missing, while the one here is about surplus flags (Junk flag).
Depends on: 809428
The issues still exists, even in the latest stable version I still have 2 folders marked as junk folder. Only one should be marked. Either Junk or Spam! NOT both. 1and1 by default uses spam. As user I would like to control in TB which folder is considered junk.

My IMAP Yahoo account in both 91.10.0 and 102.0b2 flags both Bulk and Bulk Mail as Junk folders. They both have the Junk flame icon and after installing the FolderFlags v1.4.2 add-on I can verify that the Junk flag is set on both. I unchecked that flag for Bulk Mail and it initially appeared to work (icon changed to normal mail folder). However after exiting and restarting Thunderbird both Bulk and Bulk Mail are junk folders again.

My two Fastmail IMAP, one Gmail IMAP (both with and without using [Gmail] as the server directory in the advanced settings), and one Comcast IMAP accounts don't have this problem. My POP Gmail and Local Folders pseudo account don't have any junk folders. I'm using Windows 11Pro 21H2. The Yahoo account is a free one in the yahoo.com domain, not one from a ISP etc.

I changed the title from "Version 54.0b1 flags two folders as junk folder!" to "Thunderbird flags two folders as junk folder" , set the version to 102 and changed the status from unconfirmed to new. I thought that was more appropriate than triaging a 5 year old bug report and creating a new one.

Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Summary: Version 54.0b1 flags two folders as junk folder! → Thunderbird flags two folders as junk folder
Version: 54 Branch → Thunderbird 102

We set version to the oldest value for which the issue exists.

Version: Thunderbird 102 → Thunderbird 91
Severity: normal → S3

Martin, are you still seeing this issue with newer versions?

Wayne, I'm now on 102.10.0 and it appears the problem is solved. But I'm not anymore using 1and1 for my emails. So it is not a 100% comparison to when I ran into the issue initially.
