Details

Using Mozilla release 0.99 (2002031104) Upon allowing Mozilla to compact folders, all new messages in my Inbox were marked as read. This could be seen occuring as the folder was being compacted, the new message count in the left hand pane would count down. Upon completion of compaction all messages in the inbox were marked as "read".
This may be related to bug 124513 (Data Loss after Mail folder compaction), that reports the same problem seen in a local mail folder. How reproducible is this? Have you tried a newer build? And what does "allowing Mozilla to compact folders" mean? Don't you have to manually start "compacting" (purging of messages marked as deleted) on IMAP with the "marked as deleted" model? WFM with 2002041103 on W2K.
I've seen this happen on major builds since at least 0.96, haven't tried any nightlies. By "allow compaction" I'm referring to the dialog box "Do you wish to compact all offline and local folders to save disk space?", which I presume is related to Preferences/Offline & Disk Space/ "Compact folder when it will save over x KB". I have my Inbox set to download messages. In the past when I have seen the new message count dropping during compaction I've manually interrupted Mozilla (by killing the process) and things were fine upon restarting, but this is presumably because the compaction is taking place on a copy of the mail folder, and when I restarted Mozilla was using the original mail folder. I agree, this appears to be the same as bug 124513, although that entry doesn't appear properly categorized.
This is a dupe of bug 100781 "Unread messages changed to read when compacting folder", and was just (04/15/2002, 15:41) fixed on the trunk by bienvenu. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 100781 ***
