Details
Microsoft has released Windows Media Player for MacOS X. This release of Media
Player works as an application not as a plug-in. Unfortunately, Mozilla does
not understand the preference setting (Helper Applications) for launching the
media player as an application.
here's what I provided in the preference setting:
Mime Type: video/x-ms-asf
Extension: asf, asx
Handled By: Windows Media Player.app
When I click on a link that should launch the Windows Media Player application
(as it does in IE) the cursor shows that Mozilla is thinking for a second.
After this I must quit Mozilla and relaunch because a number of things no longer
work.

This bug was unusual. It seems that the Windows media player installation
program does not correctly install the Media Player plugin. Once I moved the
plugin file manually into the Library/Internet Plugins folder I was able to
launch the Media Player application. I did have to define the mime type as below.
