Details
From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:0.9.9+) Gecko/20020416 BuildID: 2002041603 Clicking mailto: or news: links in windows applications opens Ourlook or Outlook Express rather than Mozilla mail/news. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Paste a mailto: or news: link into most any Windows application (but probably not a mozilla application ;-) then click the link. Also try a mailto: link in Start, Run. Actual Results: On an XP machine with Outlook installed, Outlook always responds to the mailto: link even though I answered yes to Mozilla mail/news' prompt to handle internet mail. On my XP machine that does not have Outlook, OE starts from mailto: links. On both machines, OE tries to start when a news: link is clicked. Expected Results: If mailto: and news: are checked on in prefs, then it seems Mozilla apps should open when I click mailto: or news: links. In Control Panel, Internet Options, Programs page, the email item is currently set to "Mozilla 1.0.0+ Mail." The newsgroups item is set to Microsoft Outlook and there is no option to choose Mozilla. There are bugs that might seem related--56478 and 11459 e.g.--but I think this is quite different but possibly with similar underpinnings. Mozilla has been uninstalled, its registry keys removed, mozilla reinstalled and prefs for file types and protocols flipped off then on. See also bug 94302 which gets to the issue but has a summary that causes its importance to be overlooked.

Yes, on both XP machines "Use Mozilla as..." is on and in both cases I answered Mail/News' prompt to "use mozilla as default mail handler" (whatever) as Yes. My account on both machines has admin privs, yes. Is that helpful or not helpful in this context? ;-)

The reason for this bug is an uncomplete registration of mozilla mail in the registry. The HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto key is not changed to mozilla mail. If you execute a mailto: url in start|run outlook starts and the first question is, whether outlook should be registered as default mailer. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command probably should be ...mozilla %1 The entry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\DefaultIcon is wrong too. P.S.: Why doesn't mozilla bring different icons for each application with it?
