For pop.att.yahoo.com, you need to be more descriptive than "Checking new messages in Thunderbird takes too long or dies".
Also, did it work in 52.2.0??

What does more descriptive mean with pop.att.yahoo.com?
1. I open Thunderbird
2. It starts automatically to login: "Host contacted." "Checking login information." This happens quickly.
3. "Checking inbox for new messages." I quit waiting last time after 7-1/2 minutes.
Don't remember exactly whether this problem was present in prior (52.2.0) version. Would it make sense to 'roll back' to that version?
Thanks.

Yahoo historically has troubles. And today may be a bad day because there are widely reported issues, but are you still seeing this yesterday?

Yes. If I sit at the computer and stare at the screen long enough, it finally kicks in and gives my up-to-date email. But I'm too old to waste that amount of time. I'm tempted to install a prior version. Does that make sense?

If you still have difficulty please ask for help at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/new/thunderbird
> - Deleted index files in profile folder
This isn't normal procedure, and doing this will cause the process to be longer
