User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:54.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/54.0 Build ID: 20170612122310 Steps to reproduce: I am using Ubuntu 16.04 on a Thinkpad X1 carbon 5th gen laptop. My OS is up to date and I am using Firefox 54.0 (64Bit version). As in the heading of the question it won't allow me to select from the suggestions given either at the top search bar at Firefox, google.com search bar and etc. by pressing the down and up arrow keys. When pressing the down arrow key the appeared suggestion list gets flicks.

Have you tried if you see this issue in a new profile, too? You can find details on how to create a new profile (without changing anything in your regular profile!) at https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles . Have you tried if you see this issue in Firefox's safe mode, too? You can restart Firefox into safe mode by using the 'Restart Firefox with add-ons disabled' entry in the 'Help' menu. This will also disable graphics hardware acceleration and some JS engine optimizations, not just extensions and plugins. See https://support.mozilla.org/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .

Hi kasun(reporter), Is this reproducible with latest Firefox build? If yes, could you please provide "about:support" information as an attachment. Thanks

I had the same problem with Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS (Unity Desktop Environment), Firefox 77.0.1, and for me it was related to two other problems:
- If a field in some webpage (e.g. in GitHub login) was entered by moving from previous field by pressing Tab key, only one character could be fed to the field, because after every keystroke the text in the field was selected, thus being overwritten on next keystroke (if the field was entered by mouse click this did not happen).
- In Gedit editor's search box: The selection-on-every-keystroke was happening also there making searching impossible (Gedit outputted
** (gedit:8601): WARNING **: 10:21:17.835: (gedit/gedit-view-frame.c:121):get_iter_at_start_mark: code should not be reached
)
All these issues occurred only when using Unity DE, and when the machine (ThinkPad T480) had been suspended (straight after (re)login there were none of these problems).
For me these were fixed by disabling the shortcut "Toggle maximization state" from System Settings -> Keyboard, Shortcuts-tab -> Windows, which had been "super" key (Windows key).
