1396381 - empty value for app.support.baseURL redirects users to dubious websites instead of Firefox Help

This issue was discovered by a user in the German speaking Firefox support forum. For whatever reason the user didn't have any value in app.support.baseURL, it was an empty string.

STR:

1. set app.support.baseURL to an empty string
2. go to Help > Firefox Help
3. another example: with unsigned add-ons installed open the add-on manager and click the "learn more" link.
4. another example: with an legacy add-on installed open the add-on manager and click the legacy add-on badge.

Actual:

In step 2 Firefox opens www.firefox-help.com. In Step 3 Firefox opens www.unsigned-addons.com. In step 4 Firefox opens www.webextensions.com/.

These are all registered domains and have the potential to be abused because these domains are not under Mozilla's control!

Expected:

Mozilla can't control all domains on the world so if app.support.baseURL is changed to another domain Mozilla can't really protect the users. But at least Firefox should handle the empty string case better. Firefox should not try to interpret the IDs (or whatever this is [1],[2]) like "firefox-help" as domain names if the base url is empty.

It would be interesting to know more about how this happened. If it's just someone who played around in about:config, I don't think fixing this bug would have much user impact.
But if we suspect it's some malware that drops a line in the user's preferences in the profile to prevent access to Mozilla help sites, maybe we should try to address it. eg. by using the default value of the preference instead of the user set one.

Should we just hide these 'Learn more' links when we fail to generate a valid url for them?

The user didn't know how this happened so it's possible that it's the result of malware. Unfortunately we don't know for sure but since the user didn't know how this happened I think we can assume that the user didn't played around in about:config.

I think either hiding these 'Learn more' links or using the default value are okay. Both makes sense, I am not sure which option is the better one.

But if malware sets this then it could just set it directly to a different URL. Doesn't seem like it'd be much more than whack-a-mole to fix the empty string case but not the "different domain" case. If we add to many restrictions to the URL ("has to be something.mozilla.org" or whatever) then it's not clear to me if/why we should continue to have a pref at all.

There are so many bad things that can happen when malware has access to Firefox prefs, I'm not sure this makes a difference.

The real task here is to figure out what exactly made app.support.baseURL become an empty string. Personally, I'd bet this was changed by an add-on. I'm WONTFIXing this since I don't think we want to protect against a case that should not ever happen in the first place.

Is there any way to get e.g. about:support data from that user?

Interestingly app.support.baseURL does not seems to be listed unter "modified preferences".

I have the very same issue. I modified UBO xpi package a bit so it became unsigned, then clicked "подробная информация" (russian variant), that click sends "unsigned-addons" value in adress bar which opens http://ww2.www.unsigned-addons.com/ or other sites like this, which then redirects to any advrtesing sites with dubious content. What is it  - do i catched virus and i am gonna die or is it just developers joke ?
