* TITLE/SUMMARY
[PP] Selection won't extend after double- or triple-click

* STEPS TO REPRODUCE
0) Launch Apprunner
1) View any web page (I used www.netscape.com, as well as a non-table page)
2) Double-click on a word, or triple click on a line (I clicked on "Search", and
"Search the Web with")
3) Move the mouse pointer to within the selected word or phrase. Then drag select
downwards.

* RESULT
 - What happened

The selection does not extend beyond the existing selection, despite the cursor
being a selection I-beam.

 - What was expected

Behavior equivalent to Communicator/IE. (Selection should be extended, unless
we're supporting text drag & drop, in which case the cursor should be a hand...
;)

* REGRESSION

 - Occurs On
        Mac OS Apprunner (1999091608 optimized build)

 - Doesn't Occur On
        Win32 Apprunner (1999091608 optimized build [NT 4, Service Pack 3])
        Linux Apprunner (1999091508 optimized build)

* CONFIGURATIONS TESTED

- [Mac] Beige Power Mac G3 (266 MHz PowerPC 750), 96 MB RAM (VM on; 1 MB of VM
used), 1024x768 (Thousands of Colors), Mac OS 8.6

- [Win32] Vectra VL (233 MHz P2), 96 MB RAM, 800x600 (True Color), NT 4.0 SP3.

- [Linux] Vectra VL (266 MHz P2), 96 MB RAM. Red Hat Linux 6.0 (GNOME).

Per chat with mjudge, re-opening per 1999092208 builds.

Eli--I don't understand what you expect. When you use the term "extend" do you
mean with the shift key or do you mean start a new selection?

Mike--sometimes I seem to be getting the effect of a triple-click even though I
paused after the double-click. Also, if I don't wait long enough I can't reset
the selection if I try to start within the selection (or just place a caret
within the selected word).
I'm using the phrase "extend a selection" with the same meaning used throughout
the Selection section of the Mac OS & Win32 platform UI guidelines. Specifically,
to enlarge an existing selection.

For more context, please see p. 289-290 of the Mac OS UI guidelines.
Duh. To answer Kathy's e-mail question, yes, I erroneously omitted a step in the
instructions: yes, extending the selection requires holding the shift key down
during the drag-select.

OK, with Simon's fixes in, I double-clicked on a word and then used shift-click
to make the selection both bigger and smaller. I don't see any problems. I am
going to mark this as fixed. Eli, please reopen if necessary.

Eli--I think there needs to be a separate bug for this: on mozilla.org, triple-
clicking in the status updated text (such as "This week's update") doesn't
highlight the line. However, triple-clicking "The" in the left column (of The
Mozilla Organization) does select the whole line.
Re-opening; 100% reproducible on today's builds. However, you need to do the
third click (while holding the shift key down) quickly.

If you'd like to see this in person, just drop by on Monday.

Re: the other issue. Yes, Simon & I had noticed that. I'll write it up, and note
the bug number here afterwards.
[Side-issue not yet written up, since Mac OS double-clicking is broken on the
most recent build, per bug #14990.]

please reverify i fixed things this weekend this should work now. i will check it
out myself and reopen it if i detect a problem
Depends on: 14990
[Need 14990 to be fixed in order to verify this.]
Status: RESOLVED → VERIFIED
Verified fixed on 1999102008 (Mac OS, 8.6), 1999101908 (Win32, NT 4.0SP5), and
1999101908 (Linux, RH 6.0/GNOME).

On Mac OS & Linux, the drag-select gesture can be confused by Seamonkey as a
third-click of a triple-click gesture.

However, I don't think this can be fixed without making the triple-click gesture
harder to access, and am not re-opening for that purpose, since both the triple-
click gesture and the one described in this bug are obscure gestures.

The bug brade mentioned is no longer taking place; selections are, however,
blocked by style changes, and a bug report for that exists. (bug # avail upon
