This makes it hard to add a nick as a contact.

What did that context menu offer in Instantbird? I added a context menu for verifying participant's identity, so adding other actions should be much simpler now.

Adding a contact is as simple as double clicking the participant in most protocols.

I think adding a nick as a contact, and starting a private conversation with the nick (which was the double-click action).
