Set the menu bar on OS X to dark, that's in System Preferences > General > Use dark menu bar and dock. Then it's really hard to see the persistent notification to let you know that the microphone or video camera is being used. It's there and you can spot it if you mouse over icon. I've attached a screenshot of that. Expectation is that when the menu is dark, the icon is inverted and is light.

It's possible that the approach in bug 1403989 fixes this bug as well.
