From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.9+) Gecko/20020416
BuildID: 2002041621

Unable to retrieve list of newsgroups from server news.accessv.com when click on
subscribe (news settings checked to be correct). I have tried various builds up
to RC1 and later. I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling and removing all
hidden files and directories. No workarounds found.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Install Mozilla
2.Set up newsgourp account
3.click subscribe to newsgroups

Actual Results: twirly shows activity for a second, then stops. No list of
newsgroups is displayed.No network activity.

Expected Results: Newsgroups should be gradually downloaded while twirly shows
activity, then list should be displayed.
Ihave not tried a full build from scratch on a Sorcery Linux system with the
same results
I'm hitting a block trying to test this bug - the server is limited to
authenticated users. Sorry, I can't help until I can test it myself...
There is no prompt for authentication when connecting to the news server.

When I click on subscribe, I get taken directly to the new group list box,
where there is activity for a very short period of time but NO news groups get
listed. There is no further network activity after the initial brief burst.

As far as I am aware, no authentication is needed. I have tried other software
to download newsgroup articles without specifying authentication information. I
do NOT even have "this server requires me to log on" checked in Outlook.
Okay, thanks for the additional information.

Can you provide us with an NNTP log?

http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#nntp contains
setup instructions.

Thanks!

*** Bug 140632 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Ufa - I meant authentication in the sense of IP-block sniffing.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help soft this out.

Ufa
Confirming, based on log, but I'm not sure if the error is in us, or the server.
This is one of those bugs I can't readily investigate, so I hope you'll work
with us closely, Ufa. Thanks!
Summary: cannot retrieve list of newsgroups → cannot retrieve list of newsgroups [Typhoon v1.2.3]
Really confirming.
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
In my original report, 140632 (marked as dupe of this bug), I found the problem
cleared up when I changed my primary email account from IMAP to IMAPS. I don't
know why, but the newsgroups worked after that.
tg.
Today (after some time of not trying), I was able to see one newgroup listed
when I did a refresh. This seems to have happened of its own accord. I have
been unable to duplicate changing IMAP to IMAPS.
Ufa
It turns out that the one sincle newsgroup listed after the refresh is a NEW
newsgroup - it is the only new newsgroup posted to the server.
Ufa
I too have noticed this behavior with a news server (news.ic.net. I don't think
you'll be able to access it). I can subscribe to newgroups using the formats
news://rec.games.video.classic or nntp://comp.os.linux, but when I try to
download the hierarchy, I don't get anything. The server is "
NNTPcache server V2.4.0b3 [see www.nntpcache.org] (c) 1996-2000", and does
respond to the "list" command to list newsgroups on the server.
Tom Glaab, you still having problems with this?

If you do, could you please attach a protocol log to this bug when you're
retrieving the newsgroups?

I have a feeling after sending LIST, the server is returning some newsgroup
starting with a period ("."), at which point we just stop talking to the server.

Instructions can be found at:
http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#nntp

Thanks

I attached the NNTP trace from Mozilla.

I also did a list on my server and got the following:

This corroborates your theory of newsgroups that a newsgroup beginning with a .
is causing errors.
if it's groups like .foo.bar, I can try to fake that and debug it.

I don't have access to a server that causes that. if someone has one, please
point me at it.
Status: NEW → ASSIGNED
Target Milestone: --- → mozilla1.2beta
hmm, I'm not able (yet) to fake this problem.

can someone point me at a server that will cause it?
news.accessv.com

I just tried version 1.1 of mozilla on Windows (it appears to exist on Windows
and Linux) and the problem remains.
I tried to duplicate the bug on Mozilla 1.2a without success. Either the bug is
fixed or the "." newsgroup theory is correct and my news server
(basic.bs.webusenet.com) has no "." groups.

tg.
Just downloaded and tried Mozilla 1.2a (Windows). The problem still exists. New
server news.accessv.com
Attached patch fixSplinter Review
if the server sends us ". 0 1" or "... 0 1", we skip those lines.

if AddNewsgroupToList() fails, don't return -1, since it's not fatal.

Thanks guys. Good job.

Ufa, thanks for testing this prior to and after the fix and keeping us updated.
