Sometimes when opening a new window, the previous window's tooltip will not be
closed. By switching to the former window and hovering over the offending tool,
the tooltip will then be closed.

Conrirm with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98SE; en-US; rv:1.0.0+) Gecko/20020505
and other versions at leas since 0RC1.
Sometimes tooltips stay at the old place in the new TAB or Window, sometimes
they first close and than reopen at another place in the window, before the new
TAB opens, where the tooltip then still is shown.

Tooltips don't disappear for me either (Build: 2002052305) Macosx.
It is entirely reproducible.
1. Hover over toolbar link until tooltip for link appears.
2. Command-tab to switch applications. Tooltip will persist on top of front
window until Mozilla is put in the foreground again.

Tooltips doesn't always for me also. Using linux 2002052507. Happens most
notibly when hovering over a tab. The tooltip showing the title shows up. Next I
move to antoher workplace (by 'pressing' my mouse pointer to the side of the
screen). Sometime the tootltip stays visble in hte other screen. Have to go back
to remove it.
I too get non-disappearing tooltips (with linux 2002051013), in the following
situation:
1. Open the search sidebar, and get some results displayed in it.
2. Point the mouse somewhere *above* the search results list, e.g. over the
search terms textbox, or over a toolbar (not over the list of search results,
and not in the main browser panel).
4. Now, move the mouse down into the list of search results. At this stage it
doesn't matter if you wait until a tooltip pops up or not.
5. Now move the mouse either rightwards out of the search results and into the
main browser pane, or leftwards out of the mozilla window entirely.
6. The tooltip for one of the search results pops up (or remains popped up if
you waited long enough for it to popup in step 4). It stays indefinitely, until
you point to it or go back into the search results list.

reporter: can you (or anyone else) reproduce this bug with a recent build of
mozilla (for example, 1.2)? if so, please comment again with details. if not,
please resolve this bug as WORKSFORME. thanks.

As I see the situation, the bug is not really solved, but no longer a problem.
I tested with Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021122
Steps:
1. clear cache
2. goto http://home.t-online.de/home/Bielefeld__Buss_oHG/seite20.htm
3. wait until load is finished
4. move mousepointer to header "REFERENZEN" and click immedeately (before tooltip
appears)
expected: new page will be shown without tooltip
actual (for me in 7 of 10 tests): new page starts loading, and tooltip
"Stand 25.11.2002" will be shown for 2 ... 4 seconds

Dadgummit... It seems like I've seen this recently, but I can't reproduce it.
It may have been before I upgraded, too. I'm running 20030612... tell ya what,
I can close it for now and re-open it if I see it again.

Yup, just reproduced it again on v1.4 build 20030612 - is that recent enough to
be relevant?

when I put the pointer over the link, the tooltip shows up.
then quickly moving focus to other window (alt+tab in windows)
gives this result:
1. other window overlap tooltip: tooltip disappear at once
2. no overlap: tooltip disappear after a few secs
this looks like ok behaviour to me

I've not managed to make it reproducible on demand- including with this
testcase. But I've had it occur in the normal usage of my system such that the
tooltip stays put - indeed, perhaps after several seconds it will go away, but
applications should not leave bits of themselves lying about in front of other
apps. Now, admittedly, rolling the mouse over the tooltip will generally make
it go away - but again, this is still not good behaviour.

Okay, I now have a procedure to reproduce this bug.
1) Set cookies to "Ask me before storing a cookie".
2) Visit a site which will generate a cookie request.
3) Before the cookie comes up, hover the mouse over an item which will generate
a tooltip.
4) When the dialog comes up to query whether Mozilla should accept the cookie,
switch to another application. The tooltip will stick around...

Trying again with Moz 1.8a3, W2K, even if a popup dialog (e.g password prompt;
cookie prompt doesn't exist any more?) is generated the tooltip goes away.
Pressing any key clears it to.

I can say that I haven't seen it in a long, long time - but I'm running Firefox
now. My testcase that I posted below seems to work in Firefox.
