User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/63.0.3239.132 Safari/537.36 Steps to reproduce: File Exit or any restart request like when there's a new version, new add-on version, or I make changes in the mailbox areas. Actual results: Nothing, TB won't restart. When I first redid my entire TB, it would hang, but eventually restart, not it's not restarting at all. The only way I can close TB now is by the tool bar, right click & close. Even trying to X out doesn't work : ( Expected results: File Exit or X should close TB & all the open windows associated with it.
> The only way I can close TB now is by the tool bar, right click & close. I think you mean the Windows task bar, correct? Does it also happen in safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Summary: File Exit Doesn't Work → File > Exit Doesn't Work to shut down Thunderbird
Yes, the windows task bar. And I am pretty sure I tested this in safemode months ago & the problem was less of an issue then where it would restart, but it took like 5 minutes each time. Now I can't even get it to restart. And just to be clear, I haven't even imported ALL my tons of mail from the old TB which a lot of people blamed for all my TB issues. If you know of anyone who can help me to fix my TB, I don't have a lot of money, but all of these issues stress me out to NO end, take up tons of my hours & days : ( Thank you Wayne

I think there is a two minute timeout on shutdown, so I don't think 5 minutes is possible. Please retest safe mode https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird - start in safe mode - do nothing - file exit In fact I would go even further. Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode than do the above with Thunderbird

(In reply to Michelle from comment #0) > Expected results: > File Exit or X should close TB & all the open windows associated with it. Certainly not. If you have multiple windows, like the main window, one or more new messages, the address book window, etc. you must close all windows for TB to close.

If you have multiple windows, like the main window, one or > more new messages, the address book window, etc. you must close all windows > for TB to close. Hmmm, can we disentangle this please: File > Exit (only available from main 3pane window): --> Closes TB main window AND all satellite windows (AB, Write, etc.) File > Close or clicking X on any window including main window: --> Closes only current window, any other TB windows remain open.
(In reply to Thomas D. (currently busy elsewhere) from comment #5) > Hmmm, can we disentangle this please: > File > Exit (only available from main 3pane window): > --> Closes TB main window AND all satellite windows (AB, Write, etc.) Oops, thanks for the correction. That goes to show that I never use it.
(In reply to Michelle from comment #0) Hi Michelle, > User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 > (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/63.0.3239.132 Safari/537.36 > > Steps to reproduce: > > File > Exit > > or any restart request like when there's a new version, new add-on version, > or I make changes in the mailbox areas. > > Actual results: > > Nothing, TB won't restart. > > Expected results: > > File Exit or X should close TB & all the open windows associated with it. Your expected results aren't matching your steps, and your steps are mixing two scenarios, so let's make sure that we're on the same page and not mixing things up. STR Expected Result Actual Result File > Exit TB main window AND ? all satellite windows should close (just that, no automatic restart), after asking to save unsaved changes in any Write windows, (sometimes the confirmation dialogue is hidden, but the TB icon in taskbar will flash with some orange) click X or Current window (main window ? File > Close OR any one satellite window) should close (just that, no automatic restart) Restart TB now Should close all windows after ? asking to save unsaved changes in any Write windows, (sometimes the confirmation dialogue is hidden, but the TB icon in taskbar will flash with some orange) Can you please tell us your actual results for each of these 3 scenarios? Also please test and answer Wayne's comment 3... (needs your information so that we can assist you). Thunderbird might sometimes lag a bit in response time with the massive amounts of accounts and email that you seem to administer, but rest assured that it's probably still your best bet to handle your needs - your personal mail companion :) Sorry if you're experiencing stubbornness sometimes... Btw, assuming you're also deleting lots, you should definitely allow compaction to happen when asked so as to keep your data storage slim (otherwise all deleted mails will keep hanging around internally and bloat your data).
Just as an aside, isn't there a better way to go into safemode? Having to hold down the shift key until TB opens is kind of nuts IMO. And my friend said that the page on how to do safemode needs to be edited :( https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird So we tested it 2 times not in safemode & it worked. I think it's because when I am about to restart my computer, it's heavily bogged down because it's been on for a few days with tons of programs open. And yes, I'm using File - Exit, not close. Sorry & thanks a ton. :)

When we tested tonight, file > exit worked fine

In that case, I don't think this is our problem. There must be one or more things in your system that makes things take much longer, or just goes in some loop (antivirus software, other running programs, underpowered hardware, etc).
