I often write mails by pressing ctrl-m and start to type (or paste) the
recipients address shortly after this.

Apparently too short as the mail composing window comes up with the body text
field focused in the beginning and switches its focus to the address field a
tiny fraction of a second later.

When I type the mail address, one or two letters often happen to be in the body
text field, and only the rest of address appears in the address text field.

Once or twice I did to not notice this and therefore sent the mail to a corrupt
mail address (which can be a very bad thing).

Could you maybe not focus the body field in the beginning, but have the address
field focused instead?

Using Win98 700MHZ, 512 MB RAM (should suffice for typing) and todays nigthly
composition.

This was fixed before in bug 62452, so this is a regression.

I'm seeing this on Linux, too (build 2002072204).

Should this bug be closed as a dup and 62452 reopened?
I've consistently gotten exactly this bug with 1.0, 1.1a and 1.1b in windows 2000.

i, too, use ctrl-m to begin new emails.

still happens in 1.2alpha (I'm on win2k)

I'm still seeing this in Mozilla 1.2a (including most all previous versions)
under Linux and Win32. Opening new e-mail composer windows will almost always
replicate this condition. Typing the address before the window is fully rendered
(often with a noticeable delay) results in the first half of the address
appearing in the message body, with the remainder appearing in the To: field.

I still see this with 1.3a on Windows - build 20021111.

I run into this many times every day - I hit compose to start a new message and
either start typing the address and it ends up in the body rather than the to: line.
taking all of varada's bugs.

I still see this in Mozilla Mozilla 1.3a build 2002121215
(Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.3a) Gecko/20021212)

Whenever I compose a message using CTRL-M, File -> New - > message, or hitting
the toolbar compose button, and start typing immediatly the text starts off in
the body, before the focus changes to the address field. So part of the email
address is in the body section of the email and the rest is in the address field.

This bug was reported as still in place in 1.5 at the dupe. I recently saw it
in a 1.4/Win98 install on a rather slow computer; I haven't been able to
replicate it on my not-terribly-fast (750MHz) Win2K machine with any release
version.

I found a way to easily reproduce the bug that makes it clear why it's not seen very often.

Start up Thunderbird and right after it comes up do a Ctrl-M and immediately start typing the address. Bingo, it happens. Try it again and it doesn't. The first compose after startup must be loading stuff for the first time from disk and/or doing a lot of CPU activity that doesn't happen from then on, and that causes the added delay that draws out the time between window opening and moveal of the focus to the address field.

Why is the focus initially in the message body to begin with?
I can vouch for this on all versions of Thunderbird I have used (currently 2.0a). After hitting CTRL+M, there's a lag while the compose window is drawn, and during that time keyboard input is buffered. The focus in the Compose window starts out in the body, so that's where the buffered keyboard text goes (about 3-5 characters). Then the focus shifts to the first address field, so the remaining characters go in there. With autocomplete on and hooked up to LDAP, it invariably autocompletes a different address than the one I intended, so if I don't watch what I'm doing, the wrong recipient gets the message.
Confirmed. This bug is very annoying though.
sorry for the spam. making bugzilla reflect reality as I'm not working on these bugs. filter on FOOBARCHEESE to remove these in bulk.

anyone see this in Seamonkey?
lately WFM with thunderbird trunk.

I can still repeat it in Thunderbird 2.0.0.12
I can NOT repeat the problem in version 3.0a1pre (2008042903). (By repeat the problem I mean hit Ctrl-M to bring up a new message and start typing as soon as I can. Now all the text I type goes into the address field.)
This should be a bug for TB 2 and the corresponding SM version based on MOZILLA_1_8_BRANCH, according to comment #19, comment #20 and comment #21.
