of bug 161775

(Reporter: ethan, Assigned: bugzilla)
Details
I believe that this is a variant on bug 117864, but bugzilla would not let me
reopen it. I am replying to an email (from an IMAP server) that contains the
main message in the body, and 100+KB *text* attachment. When I reply to the
email, using plain-text composer, it decides to inline the entire attachment.
At first I'd thought that Mozilla was dead, but it was using 100% of CPU time
and, about 30 seconds later, the composer window was opened and functional.
Clearly I don't want to resend the entire attachment back to the sender, so I
select the entire attachment and press Backspace. Once again, Mozilla goes away
for 30 seconds.
At this point everything is fine. But clearly this doesn't make sense. I
understand that some mailers put the entire body of the message in an
attachment, so if it weren't inlined then it might become impossible to reply to
the actual email.
Maybe one solution would be to see if the body is empty, and then quote inline
the first text attachment. Another might be to not quote inline an attachment
over a certain size, or simply to ask the user. But this isn't very happy.

A followup, and possibly a secondary bug. I went back to this email with the
large text attachment, because I needed to reply to it again. I the Mail/News
window, after I clicked on the message, I clicked on Stop so as not to wait for
the entire attachment to download. This worked - the main message was displayed,
and the attachment wasn't loaded.
I then pressed Reply, and got a very confused Compose window. The To: line is
not filled with the person I'm replying to -- I need to enter it manually. The
body of my reply is empty, not even including the body of his email. I then
press Tab (since I indent the first line of my paragraphs) and type a letter.
The cursor jumps up to "line -1" or whatever you'd call it. Basically, it seems
to create a line above the first line, only half visible in the window.
Something is pretty confused here.
Well, my experience is worse. When I try to reply to an email with
attachment(s), and I have only tried those attachments that cannot be displayed
in the message, Mozilla crashes outright. I am using Build 2002112304. As soon
as I hit reply the button on an email with an attachment (mine dealt with MS
Word and Excel attachments), Mozilla brings up an error message that it had
performed an illegal operation and it needs to close. I am still surviving
because of only the "paste as quote" feature. This is a pretty serious bug, and
I think it should be a high priority to fix this.

Spandan, if you are using IMAP, you are probably seeing bug 181856. Let me know
if it's the case. Thanks
Jean, yes indeed I am using IMAP. However, bug 181856 (which itself is a
duplicate of bug 180452) is the bug that opened the Bookmark Manager if one just
pressed B (not ctrl+B). And I don't see that (181856 or 180452) bug in my
version (build 2002112304). Yet the problem that Mozilla crashes when I try to
reply to a message with attachment persists. Is it possible that it was a
different bug? Please let me know. Thanks.

This is the same thing as bug 161775 (or 161775 is the same as this;-)).
Actually, this bug seems to have fixed itself. I now have build 2002120604, and
no more crashes, or even delays when replying to any messages with attachment.
I don't know what happened, but sure am happy to see it fixed. Now did other
people also notice this fixed or did I just get lucky? If I didn't, maybe the
bug could be marked RESOLVED WORKSFORME or something along those line
(preserving of course, the possibility of reopening it)?
