User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:59.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/59.0 Build ID: 20180317145140 Steps to reproduce: I've changed the font size of 'monospace' font to 16, and I also set the minimum font size to 16 (Edit -> Preferences -> Display -> Formatting -> Font & Colors -> Advanced). The font size is respected in message composer (in editor), but text/plain messages in message reader are still shown with font size 12. I also unchecked "Allow messages to use other fonts" though it shouldn't matter for text/plain messages. Actual results: Font size in received messages text/plain didn't change. Expected results: Font in received messages text/plain should have minimum font size of 16.
Just increasing font manually in message reader every time Thunderbird starts isn't viable, because that also increases font size of HTML messages, which I could read well as they were. I edited the font settings for 'Latin'. Some post on Internet suggested I should edit fonts for 'Unicode' but that choice isn't there. Also, the settings is applied in message composer, so it appears that message reader fails to respect this setting.
It appears that HTML messages also don't respect minimum font size (with "Allow messages to use other fonts" unchecked).
Yes, I think if the HTML in the message uses CSS, which is likely, you can't change that. Please attach an .eml file of the message here. Save the message or drag it out to the desktop or a folder and use "Attach File" above. Please edit the .eml file in a text editor to remove personal information.
I have no problem with HTML emails, I can read most of them fine. But in text/plain emails, the minium font size isn't respected.

Oh, this is about plain text messages. The show just fine for me on Windows. Before we ask our Linux people, can you check your font setup: Tools > Options (different on Linux, what is it, Edit > Preferences?) Display, Fonts & Colors, Advanced. Put: Monospace: Courier New or some other font, size 14 or more. Use fixed width font for plaintext messages. If that doesn't do it, let me know.
In Monospace I have 'monospace' which on my system is 'DejaVu Sans Mono' and plain text messages are displayed in this font. I've tried to set it explicitly too and as expected it was same. I've set its size to 16 and I also set minimum size of all fonts to 16. But for some reason, the plain text messages in message reader are shown with size 12. The font size nor minimum font size doesn't have effect.
Hmm, last I checked on my mum's Linux Mint system, she was using a very large font and that worked. The trouble with Linux is that there are so many distributions and they all do their own thing. Richard, can you set the size of the font to be used to display plaintext messages?

With this setting in the prefs Display/Formatting and then in Advanced choose "Other Writing Systems" it works for me. I know, it's not the most discoverable dialog, but we use the one Firefox provides.

Damn right! You need to make this setting at least for "Latin" and "Other Writing Systems", that's UTF-8. Every encoding is associated with a so-called writing system, it's very complicated.

I can also confirm problems here.

For me, plain text messages respect the font size, but all HTML mails seemed to ignore them. I found that configuring the font size via "Other Writing Systems" rather than "Latin" did work (possibly both are needed). Somehow these Latin based messages are not being detected as such, or there is a very bad choice of caption.

My locale is en_GB.UTF-8

I am using the latest 66.ob3 on OSX10.4. I have a hires screen (2880 x 1800) which defaults to very small text, which is easy to adjust with Cmd +/- keys. However after selecting medium text in the preferences for drafting, I seem to get about every imaginable comparative font size when emails are passed back and forth creating random combinations of html and plain text headers/messages, etc from other's systems.

So a couple of different questions:

  1. does the actual font size going out in a message actually have anything to do with the temporary display size?

  2. given that I happen to have different viewing sizes in my two different mail accounts (not intentional!), if I just toggle back and forth between them (which both change together, but at different relative sizes), is it possible that preferences settings are not being read properly in the saved pref files?
