Details |
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/64.0.3282.186 Safari/537.36
Steps to reproduce:
I don't do anything. My thunderbird just periodically crashes, several times per day, when I'm not even using it. Probably it might be doing a pull to get new mail from our exchange mail server, but who knows? I'm willing to help debug, but I would need very detailed instructions on what to do.
Actual results:
Pop-up windows shows something like "Thunderbird crashed, sorry, do you want to send info to the developers and restart?" to which I reply Yes, notify the developers and Yes, restart.
Expected results:
Shouldn't have crashed.

Not to be contrary, but are you submitting all your crash reports? Because you say crashing multiple times a day but there are multiple crash reports only on April 13

I should have said ".. sometimes multiple times per day". It crashed every single day for 4 days in a row (10, 11, 12, 13), and on the 13th it crashed 3 times on the same day.

I see your lsat crash report was Friday https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/70fa5ff3-286a-4128-8d06-e34300180427
Is that a good sign?

Still crashing pretty much daily. I usually log out over the weekend, so there won't be crash reports from Friday - Monday. It didn't crash yesterday, or last night, and hasn't crashed yet this morning, so I guess that's a good sign. The last few crash reports are:

Or, do you have filters for mail coming into your Inbox?

No I have no junk settings, both boxes are clear. I'd attach a screenshot to prove it, but I don't really see any "attach" button on this bugzilla page... sorry. But no, I have junk turned off completely.
I *do* have lots of filters, but they are in outlook not in thunderbird. I do the filtering in outlook; the messages should just show up in the right folders for thunderbird.

Do you mean, filtering in exchange? Or are you actually using Outlook on the same or different computer, with Thunderbird as an additional client?
And do you have any special settings in Thunderbird so that the message that were filtered appear immediately in the Thunderbird folders?

Sigh, it's complicated. Here's the situation:
a) I use thunderbird to read/write mail. I "always" have a thunderbird window open on my windows machine at work (except when it crashes, or when I log out over the weekend). I use this thunderbird window for the very very vast majority of my email.
b) I also have an outlook session open, because I need calendar notifications; and, when I need to update my email filters or create new ones, I do it through outlook. On very rare occasions I do some amount of email read/write/send from the outlook client (for example, there are a few folders that I do not "subscribe" to from thunderbird, and only look at on rare occasions from outlook).
c) So yes I am actually using Outlook on the same computer, with Thunderbird as an additional client.
d) To complicate it a tiny bit further: when I go home at night, I might also use thunderbird on my Mac at home to read/send email.
e) to the best of my knowledge, I don't have any special settings in thunderbird to make messages appear immediately (I would if I could, but I never heard of this before). I just "check for new mail in all folders" every few minutes. Or click on the "get messages" button.
f) MOST of the crashes (maybe even all of them?) have been while I am not at my desk, not using thunderbird anywhere at all, just out of the blue.

Please try mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks set to false. (use the config editor https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/config-editor )
Is it better?

It crashed again last night (bp-4cce0c2b-ba00-44f5-87c1-9028c0180515). I've now modified the mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks setting. We will see....

I don't want to jynx things, but so far so good, no crashes to report since changing the mail.server.default.fetch_by_chunks setting. (Also the performance of getting messages feels a bit better, though I have no hard evidence, just a feeling).
Thanks, I hope this is The Fix!

FWIW - other random crash bug reports https://mzl.la/2II1km8
Can you try this beta version from https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/60.0b5/win32/en-US/Thunderbird%20Setup%2060.0b5.exe ?
And disable automatic updates in tools > options > advanced> updates

I have installed your beta version and disabled automatic updates. Hmmm... restarting has caused it to go from 60.0b5 to 60.0b6, apparently the change to not auto-install-updates takes effect after a restart and it updated once before the change in setting. What does that do? Should I re-install the b5 version or something now that the setting is NOT to auto-update?

Well, one little gripe about 60.0n6, the "Quick Filter" button appears to be always highlighted when it is "turned on". It didn't used to be. It is distracting. Not anything fatal, just distracting to see a highlighted button when the mouse is not anywhere near hovering over it. I don't need the button to tell me that the quick filter is turned on -- I can see the quick filter data entry box.
But so far things haven't crashed.

Another gripe about 60.0b6: the "headings" on the panel that shows Subject, Correspondents, Date, some other columns (I guess these are configurable and I selected what columns to show?) -- anyway, the "decorations" of that column are missing or wrong. No "underline" between the header and the list of messages being displayed, for one thing. I don't exactly remember what it looked like before, but I know it looked different than now and my eyes are just jarred by what it is showing now. I wish I knew how to insert a screenshot into this Bugzilla forum; but anyway, I guess this would be a different thread.
The good news is that, so far, no crashes with this version.
