Steps to reproduce:

Thunderbird asks me to compress all the emails, although I got a 4 TB ssd harddisk. I could understand if my ssd were a little to small for the giant emails but it is not.
What you are seeing is automatic compact. Compacts are done as much for performance as for saving disk, so you won't want to turn it off. But you can reduce the frequency of compacts by increases the value at tools > options > advanced > advanced to be in the 200-400MB range for example.

Summary: Thunderbird still asks me to compress emails but I got a 4 TB harddisk → Thunderbird still asks me to compact emails but I got a 4 TB harddisk
A missing piece to comment 1, if you are using the German locale, I believe they translate "compact" to "compress". But Thunderbird is NOT doing a compress in the classic definition of simply making a file smaller by some compression algorithm.

Thunderbird is doing a COMPACT, which is the process of removing from the file, emails which have been previously marked as deleted. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/compacting-folders
