"Automatically complete text..." master doesn't disable sub-options

I have noticed this on Linux and Windows XP running Mozilla RC3. Enable Smart Browsing/"Automatically complete text typed into Location bar" Choose Advanced and enable all suboptions.. Disable Smart Browsing/"Automatically complete text..." Notice the behavior of the location bar. On my computer, all of "Automatically complete text.." will still function while "Automatically complete text ..." is disabled. Also since the parent option is disabled, you can disable the sub-options. To fix this you have to re-enable parent option "Automatically complete text...", choose Advanced and then disable each individual part, and finally disable the parent option.

This still does not work for me on Mozilla 1.1 beta. (2002072208) If I enable all of the child options under advanced for "Automatically complete text typed into Location bar", and then disable the parent check box, all of the child features are still enabled. The parent checkbox should disable all of the child options... I'm having a hard time explaining this clearly, but hopefully someone understands.

the second (dropdown the old entries) one disables the third (search engine) for me, why should be anything more?

I can't reproduce this. I'm using solaris nightly 2002120522 for solaris. Patrick, as I understand it, you're not just talking about the preferences user interface; you're saying that the individual autocomplete features are still working, despite the fact the master autocomplete checkbox is off. Could you test this with a current version of mozilla and see if you can still produce it?

I'm now using Mozilla 1.2b (the newest port for 4.7-stable). Mozilla/5.0(X11;U;FreeBSD i386;en-US;rv:1.2b)Gecko/20021114. It seems to be closer to fixed, but still a small problem. If I enable all of the options under advanced, and then disable the master checkbox "Automatically complete text typed into Location bar", the "Show internet search engine" option remains enabled. I still see the 'Search x for "what i typed" ' popup. All of the other options are disabled correctly though, which was not true in 1.1 (if I recall correctly). Hope that helps. And yes you described what I was trying/failing to explain.

I'm confirming this. Here are the steps to reproduce: 1) Open Preferences and select Navigator->Smart Browsing. 2) Select "Automatically complete text...". Click on the "Advanced" button. 3) Within the "Autocomplete Preferences" window, select "Show internet search engine". Select "OK" to close the window. 4) Turn off "Automatically complete text...". Click "OK" to close preferences. 5) Select the URL bar, clear it, and type some text. Actual behavior: The dropdown appears offering to perform an internet search on the text I typed. Expected behavior: No dropdown, based on the fact the "Automatically complete text..." master control is off. It's not my intention to increase the scope of this bug report, but I also two other related bugs. First of all: 1) Within "Autocomplete preferences", set "Show list of matching results" to on. Everything else can be off. Select "OK". 2) Within Preferences->Smart Browsing, set "Automatically complete text..." to off. Select "OK". 3) Type some text into the URL bar. Expected results: No dropdown under the URL bar. Actual results: A line appears under the URL bar, as if mozilla were creating a dropdown with nothing in it. Second of all: 1) Open Preferences->Smart browsing. Select (if needed) "Automatically complete text...", then deselect it again. Note that the "Advanced..." button grays out when the checkbox is deselected. Click "OK" to close preferences. 2) Open Preferences->Smart browsing again. Expected results: "Automatically complete..." checkbox should still be deselected and "Advanced..." button should still be grayed out. Actual results: "Automatically complete..." checkbox is deselected, but "Advanced..." button is active and works.

From comment 5: #0 is bug 97344, Disabling autocomplete should also disable search row From comment 6: #1 might be bug 158235, autocomplete appears even when search row is off and no matches are available. (If it's not 158235, please file a new bug instead of reopening this one, and give the bug number of the new bug here.) #2 is bug 179432, autocomplete prefs advanced button should stay disabled if main pref is disabled *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 97344 ***
