Emerging Techologies is working on experimental WebExtension APIs for building distributed applications: https://github.com/mozilla/libdweb ET plans to develop these APIs, with a view to eventually land them as Web Extension APIs in Firefox. Security review and feedback on these APIs will be needed to guide these in line with existing APIs, and also in line with the to-be-developed, Web Extension Security Model (bug 1492710)
