1496983 - Imperfection of Desktop Mozilla bookmark import/export

Steps to reproduce:

Import bookmart (from desktop Chrome as .html) from .html file. Firefox Quantum 62.0.3(64-bit)


Actual results:

I am not fully satisfied of built-in tab import tool of desktop Firefox.

Few weeks ago for some reason Chrome on my Smartphone stopped to add web-pages as bookmarks. ("Unable to add bookmark" mistake).

Today I decided to install mobile firefox, synchronize it with my desktop firefox and import extra bookmarks, which I have in my chrome (already synchronized between desktop and smartphone).

Before this operations I forget to backup my Firefox profile (this mistake makes me nervous now, I can't compare firefox bookmark before and after procedure). But for my luck in firefox profile folder exists subfolder  bookmarkbackups with fresh 1 day backup files .jsonlz4. Perhaps, it means, that I lost nothing important our my data.

It one word, In Library window I launcend import of bookmarks from .html file. And desktop frighten my by mixing my initial Firefox bookmarks and bookmarks from file. And, additionally, I was unable to controll progress of process.

!!!My ADVICE and SUGGESTION: DESKTOP FIREFOX BOOKMARK IMPORT WIZARD SHOULD BE ENHANCED BY 1) ADDING OPTION OF IMPORT A) AS MIXTURE OF ORIGINAL AND IMPORT BOOKMARKS; B) AS SEPARATE BOOKMARK TREE OF NEW IMPORTED BOOKMARKS; 2) ADDING PROGRESS BAR WHICH WILL ALERT USER ABOUT IMPORT OPERATION COMPLETION (PERHAPS USER WANTS TO SHUT DOWN PC OR REBOOT).

for me and, perhaps, for other users Browser bookmarks could be important work data acquiring and storage tool. I hope, that I have luck to restore precise copy of my very long time collected bookmarks from .jsonlz3 luck exists automatic backup.

By guess about your position name, your are right person for working through my particular current request.

Advice: You should design participation system for mozilla users, whose wants to give suggestions about Mozilla products user interface improvement. As I understand, bugzilla is suitable for bug reporting, but not to suggest any improvements of Mozilla products.

Advice about User interface of wizard of stand alone browser settings import:
dialog windows of this wizard should 1)ask user which option of import should be applied: a) to import Chrome bookmarks and browsing history as stand alone tree of library tool; b) to import Chrome bookmarks and browsing history by merging it with initial Chrome bookmarks and browsing history collected in Firefox; 2)show user progerss bar about bookmarks and browing history import operation completion; 3)offer user to backup initial Firefox browsing history and bookmarks to awoid data loss during execution of import prodecure (electricity unplug, etc.).

Import Bookmarks from HTML is part of Places, not Migration.

When you run the migrator from within Firefox (not on first-run) we already segregate those bookmarks to their own folder IIRC. Are you saying you want that to happen for importing from a bookmark HTML file?

Let's try focus on that issue since it seems to be your main one. It's too confusing to deal with multiple issues in one bug.

I'm sorry you're having trouble with import, Alexandr, and I agree we could handle this a bit better. Right now, importing from HTML always adds duplicates, and restoring from JSON always replaces existing bookmarks. Bug 271437 covers merging, which I think would also address this; bug 1432738 covers adding a progress bar.
