What is the mail server?
And your account setings?
The mail servers are generic gmail, yahoo and outlook servers provided from their services.
I am just following the default settings to access the mail.
since the time i posted this bug, i have noticed that in advanced settings the automatic syncronisation is disabled by default for bulk/junk folders.
I think this was the root cause of this problem. But then i didn't face this problem on windows on which i think this setting was enabled by default.
This is I suppose now a minor bug if at all a bug because the setting is disabled on linux.
Thanks for looking into it.

Is it working with that setting enabled on Linux?
I just looked at my Gmail Bugzilla folders properties, where my bug mail doesn't download until I select the folder. There is a setting in the General Information tab that isn't enabled with a check mark. That setting is "When getting new messages for this account, always check this folder". I'm going to enable it and see what happens.
I have that for all of my Gmail folders except the Inbox and they were all disabled.
You might want to check your Folder Properties.
Yes it is working after checking folder properties and setting it to automatically sync checked. Maybe that should be the default option on linux as well as it is on windows.

I don't believe there is a pref or behavior difference between linux and windows. That General tab setting is unchecked for all OS by default (and only exists for NON-Inbox folders).
But you have cited "bulk folder or junk mail folder". Can we assume the messages in these folder were put there by the server? If so, then this behavior is similar to server side filters. In the case of server side filters, IIRC thunderbird either needs to update the index or won't see mail in non-inbox folders "until the user clicks on the folder" (I forget which), because Thunderbird expects new mail to come via Inbox.
Therefore, I don't think this is a bug.

I agree, it's not a bug. Also, there should not be a difference between OS's regarding the "check this folder for new messages" setting (disabled by default). However, junk folder may get selected for one of the cached mailbox connections (5 by default) and report new mail anyhow using the imap IDLE function. This would probably only happen if Junk had been visited at some time during the session and if the server supports IDLE, which most do.
