User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:63.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/63.0 Steps to reproduce: I upgraded to Thunderbird 60.3.0 on Windows 10. Actual results: The Thunderbird window has an odd non-interactive border around it that is composed of glitched versions of other sections of the UI. Maximizing the Thunderbird window results in thunderbird going "full screen", maximizing over the task bar. Expected results: The thunderbird window has no border when maximized and no additional border apart from the Windows one. Maximizing Thunderbird should behave like any other program, not hiding the task bar.
I have a very similar issue in Nightly 65.0a1 (2018-11-13) (64-bit) as well as Thunderbird 60.3.0 (32-bit). It also has a broken border around the actual window which contains what appears to be a Windows classic theme title bar (you can see the Nightly icon on the top left corner and part of the close button on the top right). Sometimes the tab bar flickers and/or goes white. Also, the Nightly window is not resizable which might be related to the broken border. Thunderbird 60 was barely useable on my machine after a clean install because it had massive graphics glitches. Also the window kept getting smaller until it was just one pixel wide with every UI change or mouse event, which was very odd. After I enabled (not disabled, it was disabled by default) hardware acceleration in the options, it worked more or less fine except for the glitched border.

Maybe best moved to the Firefox queue. Richard?

Yes, maybe a hardware acceleration issue or something else that interferes with the window painting.

I can confirm the white tab bar glitch in Thunderbird 60.3.0, happens sometimes when focussing the window. Also, here's my Thunderbird's about:support: https://pastebin.com/b1QzgzBY
Hi everyone, Given that there is a Thunderbird and a Firefox issue in the same bug report, I would like to ask Nitroxis to submit a new bug only for Firefox so we can investigate further. Will move the component back to Thunderbird since the reporter added new information for the Thunderbird issue. Nitroxis, if you submit the bug for Firefox please also NI? me on it. Thanks!

Problems persist as described in Thunderbird 60.3.1.
I've tried out Thunderbird 60.3.1 on my laptop which runs an older Windows 10 build (from 2016) and Intel HD 4700 as the primary graphics adapter and it seems to work fine, i.e. does not exhibit the problems I've described here. I think this allows us to narrow it down to a problem with more recent Windows builds or Nvidia graphics cards/drivers.
Setting mail.tabs.drawInTitlebar to false seems to be a workaround for now.
Do you have hardware acceleration enabled at options > advanced > general?

Summary: Window has odd borders and fullscreens instead of maximizing → Window has odd borders and fullscreens instead of maximizing when mail.tabs.drawInTitlebar = true
Yes I do. My about:support is in a paste linked to somewhere in this ticket. The problem worsens severely when hardware acceleration is disabled, in which case the entire window will flicker, disappear entirely, be completely white, or only render some of its elements (with the rest being transparent or white), in rapid random succession.

https://mzl.la/2BMsQya - query limited to drawInTitlebar in comments (which may not be a great query)
Problems persist as described in Thunderbird 60.3.3.

Does changing the hardware acceleration setting have an impact?
What do you mean? What you quoted describes exactly how the problem changes when HW acceleration is disabled, the first few posts/comments in this bug describe the problem with HW acceleration enabled.
I can confirm this bug. HW acceleration was disabled by default (on my profile at least) rendering TB completely unusable. Using the keyboard to open the menu works, as well as the options window so I could turn on HW acceleration. Setting drawInTitlebar to false is a viable workaround for the problem. On Firefox (63.0.3 64-bit, on the same hardware (NVidia Quatro K2000M) and OS (Windows 10 64-bit)) the drawInTitlebar doesn't seem to be problematic. Could this be related to the TB-specific XUL support, maybe in combination with some NVidia-specific quirk? My other PC which also has an NVidia gfx card doesn't have this problem.

Problems persist as described in Thunderbird 60.4.0.

Firefox is now affected too, since version 65.0.

My Laptop started exhibiting the bug (in both Thunderbird and Firefox 65, Windows 10 1803 and 1809) behaviour after installing one of these, which were required for other pieces of software:

  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable - 10.0.40219
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable - 10.0.40219

So these may or may not be related to triggering this bug.

I'm not sure if any Windows Updates were installed around the same time and I don't know how to view the update history past the last update session.

Someone posted about this problem on the mozillazine forums with a plethora of additional descriptions and screenshots:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=3046634

In the meantime I can report that Thunderbird 60 and Firefox 65 are meanwhile broken on all my Windows 10 PCs.
The commonly installed software among them, beside Windows 10 1803 or 1809 is:

  • Firefox
  • Google Chrome
  • Visual Studio 2017
  • Visual Studio Code
  • ClipX
  • SumatraPDF
  • Nvidia display driver

Duplicate of this problem with a lot more traction https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1524515
Can confirm that Thunderbird behaves normally with a fixed AccentColor Windows registry setting.
