User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/60.0.3112.90 Safari/537.36
Steps to reproduce:
tested it many times
Actual results:
When viewing a message in a folder, and I delete it, the next message in that folder opens automatically.
Expected results:
When viewing a message in a folder, and I delete it, it should not open and display the next message. It should, instead, display the message folder.

Can you please clarify your report.
What does "viewing a message" mean. Viewing it in the preview pane, a tab a stand-alone window? Where does the next message open?

Hello Jorg. Thanks for your reply. I made a screen video. Is there a way for me to send that?
Otherwise, I will try in words.
On the left side of the screen, I have a list of all my email accounts. In the main part of my screen, I see a folder containing emails of whatever folder I was last in. When I click on an email in the folder, the email opens up and takes over the full screen. When I close the email I am viewing, it brings me back to where I was - looking at the folder and its contents. Before version 60, if I did not close the open email, but instead deleted it, the UI would bring me back to where I was - looking at the folder and its contents. Now in V60, the UI automatically opens the next more recent message, full-screen, if there is a newer message in the folder. If there is no newer message, the UI opens the immediate preceeding message. This is distracting and annoying,I don't want to read a message unless I open it. I don't think this is a feature, but a bug.
Thank you,
Steve

Yes. Send it to me via www.wetransfer.com. You find my e-mail hovering my name next to the picture.
BTW, you still haven't explained how you open the e-mail: I suppose in a tab. If I delete an e-mail opened in a tab, the tab disappears and I get back to the tab which shows the list of messages in the folder. So I see nothing bad.
Also, disable all add-ons, see Help menu, and try again.

Hi Jorg, I sent the video just now. I disabled all add-ons, and restared in safe mode. Same issue.
I think "tab" is the term that describes how I normally open emails. But what you described is the way it SHOULD behave. Let me use your language, and adjust it to the way it is behaving:
If I delete an e-mail opened in a tab, the tab disappears and a new tab opens automatically, without me doing anything. This new tab displays either the next message, if there is one, or the previous message, if there is not a newer message. It does not bring me back to the tab which shows the list of messages in the folder.
I hope this is clearer.
Thank you

Right, I've watched the video and it shows what you described:
First a message list in a the left-most tab.
You open a message in a new tab. You delete the message, I can't see how. Pressing delete?
The tab doesn't close, and another message is displayed in the same tab instead.
I cannot reproduce this. When I press the delete key, the tab closes.
Richard, Aceman, Alice, have you ever seen something like this?
Andrew, can you please try on a new profile: Start |thunderbird -p| and create one. You can skip account creation, just create a Feed account (Tools > Account Settings, Account Actions, Add Feed Account). That will give you local folders where you can import those three messages.

Found it: There's a pref: mail.close_message_window.on_delete. Also via the UI:
Tools > Display, Advanced: Close message window/tab on move or delete.

Hello Jorg,
Again, I wish to thank you for your quick response and help on this matter. Unfortunately, it is not yet resolved, at least for me. I followed the breadcrumb as you showed above, but ...
1. From the UI, going to Tools does not give me an option for Display.
2. The closest path I can determine is Tools > Options > Display > Advanced. Once there, I do not see any choice to "Close message window/tab on move or delete"
I am now on 60.3.2 (32-bit)
Thank you kindly

OKAY!
That helped me find it.
That resolved it.
Somehow my setting changed when I upgraded to 60 - and I had no idea it was a setting (thought it was a bug)
Thank you for your help to make TBird such a great tool

I have another computer that is still on 52.9.1
I looked to see whether the box was checked for
"Close message window/tab on move or delete"
It wasn't.
So it seems that it was never working the way it was supposed to so it never was a problem (and I didn't know it) and v60 fixed it.
Thanks again for your support of Tbird
