By root, you mean the parent folder?
By highlight, you mean the folder is bold? (vs not bold)

By root, I mean the most parent of parent folders, which shows my email address. When new mail comes in and is moved by a message filter to a folder ("Newsletters"), the email address and the Newsletters folder turn bold and orange. I believe the orange highlight is intended to mean new mail as opposed to bold which means unread mail. Note that I am using the dark gray color scheme. When I mark the message read, the Newsletters folder goes back to white but the email address is still orange, and the new mail icon is still present on the task bar. If I click any other folder name, the email address resets to white and the new mail indicator clears from the task bar.

Does this happen with default theme too?

David, Do you still see this when using 68 from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/channel/
IIRC the folder/account color for new messages should be blue, not orange.
Martin, what's up with that?

With default theme it's blue. The orange is from the 3rd party theme.
David, can you try, when it's highlighted, what happens when you hover over over the account with the mouse?

Using the new beta version... In this screenshot, I have just clicked the "mark as read" button on the top email in the list. It failed to reset the blue highlight on the account name and it failed to clear the new email icon from the task bar. I didn't notice any effect at all when hovering over the highlighted account name with the mouse.

Note in the most recent screenshot that the Inbox folder was already selected and visible when the new email came in. If you have to click "Inbox" with the mouse, that resets the highlights and the above problem doesn't occur.

It's greatly improved. But there is still a subtle problem I noticed. Give me a couple more days so I can describe it correctly. I don't get all that many emails. Thanks!

Okay, I caught it. In this screenshot, the Newsletters folder was already selected when the top email came in. At that time, it highlighted the Newsletters folder in blue and had a blue Unread dot next to the email. I clicked the dot, and the screenshot shows what happened. It cleared the blue on the Newsletters folder but not the email account name above. The "new mail" icon didn't clear from the taskbar.
