When Mozilla is started while offline, and a connection is later started, any
attempt to access a URL on the network (e.g. http://www.google.com/) results in
a alert box with the message, e.g., "www.google.com could not be found. Please
check the name and try again." Clicking OK and trying again gives the same
result. Toggling "Work Offline/Work Online" and trying again gives the same result.
Closing Mozilla and restarting, while the network connection remains up,
resolves the problem and allows access to DNS named sites.
Network connection: modem/ppp only. Linux Redhat 7.3. Mozilla build 2002061208

Should I set this as dependent on 117628?

I observed something similar in Win98. I used Mozilla, went offline, later I
clicked a link and for unclear reasons Windows did not start a dial-in. After
doing it manually. There was no way whatsover to resolve any host. I had to
restart Mozilla.
I did not receive that error message, it just waited for "resolving host".

Does this problem happen w/ ip addressess?
Based on both contributors' comments, it sounds like being Offline (in any
context) is the immediate cause of this problem.

On linux, ip addresses continue to resolve OK. Re Benjamin's previous comment,
it is not being offline that causes the problem in linux. If I am online when I
start mozilla, I can drop the connection and restart it without difficulties.
It is only when I start mozilla with my system offline.
I was not sure if you meant you select the "offiline" box in the profile manager.
Can you provide specific steps?

My references to online and offline are references to system connection state.
State: not connected
Start mozilla
Connect
State: connected
attempt to open, say, http://www.google.com/
fails
toggle File->Work Offline
toggle File->Work Online
attempt to open http://www.google.com/
fails
Stop mozilla
State: connected
Start mozilla
attempt to open http://www.google.com
succeeds
Can you provide a build number, this was fixed near the 1.0 timeframe.

I'm on 1.0. Help->About Mozilla tells me 1.0. I downloaded and installed a
post-1.0 nightly build soon after I saw that 1.0 was released. Is this not a
1.0 build?
I have since tried a couple of nightly builds, but they have been too unstable
to use, and I have not had the time to try to isolate just what the problem is,
and whether it has been reported already.

Build 2002071304.
Started Mozilla from the installer. Was asked which profile I wanted to use,
and if I wanted to work offline. Broke my connection and specified 'Work
Offline'. I was unable to connect to any sites (obviously) but I was not seeing
any alert boxes - mozilla jsut ignored my requests. I was then able to
reconnect, specify File->'Work Online' and get pages from the web. However, If
is start "normally" (i.e. using a menu item which also specifies the profile I
want to use), I am still seeing the bug behaviour.

What is the relationship between this and bug 117613?
Comment 17•22 years ago

Peter:
starting "offline" from profile manager prevents intial network activity, which
keeps your DNS list from being read.
hirata:
bug 117613 should have fixed this, but did not in all cases. See the bug I duped
to for an explaination of why problems continue.
