User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_13_6) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/11.1.2 Safari/605.1.15
Steps to reproduce:
on Mac OS X 10.13.6, using Thunderbird 60.5.0 (64 bit)
Compose new email (Write); do the usual thing (entering email address, subject line, and email text). Then hit the Send button, and before the message is sent, bring the main thunderbird window to the front by clicking on the top bar.
Actual results:
Nearly every time I do the above, Thunderbird will hang (spinning color ball); the message does get sent, but I need to kill Thunderbird using Force Quit.
Expected results:
Thunderbird should not hang every time I send a message and activate the main window before the message has been sent...

Is this step " bring the main thunderbird window to the front by clicking on the top bar." actually necessary to reproduce?
Anyway, I cannot reproduce this
I need to return to the main window and do something there... e.g. clicking on the top bar. It also happens when I Send the message, and while it is being sent, I click on the Get Messages button. It does not happen each time, but more often than not...

FWIW, other reports https://mzl.la/2UsWA9Y
If you do not have any (or many) add-ons, can you try the beta from https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/channel/
ok, I tried the beta and I have not had any hangs so far; tried to repeat the things that caused it to hang, and all is ok.
Thanks!
Marc.

Thanks for testing that. Interesting and wonderful news.

degraef, are you still using beta, and still trouble-free?

I am encountering the same problem, once or twice a day. It is really annoying.
I am running TB 60.6.1 on OS X 10.13.6. I have ZERO enabled add-ons (Conversations and Lightning are disabled) and am using the default theme.
Problem happens when replying to inbox message on my Google mail account.
I connect to that server using IMAP. When replying messages TB is configured to put replies in the folder of the message being replied to.
the inbox contains 392 messages, 124 unread. The folder is configure for offline use.
Repairing or compacting the folder or does not change the frequency with which the problem happens.
Again, this is intermittent, but here is the sequence for a typical freeze:
- View an Inbox email.
- Select to "reply" to the email
- Compose the reply and press "send"
- Compose window disappears, Thunderbird freezes with spinny multicolor pizza icon. There is no message on the TB status bar / activity manager strip at the bottom of the browser
- Have to do a "Force Quit" to get TB to quit.
- Restart TB.
- Open Inbox (if not the default). The sent-as-reply email appears in the Inbox window as the replied note.

I am still seeing the problem in TB 60.7.0.
However, I have noticed (but not proven) the problem "seems" to go away for a bit after I repair my local Drafts email folder (Properties -> Repair Folder): when I repair the folder a number of oldish items disappears.
Is it possible that (a) the 'hang' causes junk to be created in the Drafts folder, or (b) that a problem in the Drafts folder data causes the hang?
