Steps to reproduce:
First, I used nvidia-smi to record all vram usage.
Second, I have enabled hardware acceleration which does consume more vram, but the amount for a single page firefox is using is insanely high.
Third, this is Linux (Arch specifically) with the nvidia prop driver.
Fourth, the only plugin is adblock. And I've tested this issue with adblock disabled and observed the same problem.
I first opened firefox on a 4k monitor, recorded the base vram usage of around 245MB. Then I opened reddit.com (with an account, so you get a feed) and observed the vram jump up to a whooping 1.8GB for the firefox process. This number did go down after a little bit, but still hovered around the 700MB mark.
I also opened https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ and went to another tab. Checked some time later and my firefox vram was at around 1.2GB usage. I closed https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ and vram dropped to 400MB.

Could you copy and paste about:support here? I see a large amount of memory under gfx-textures.
Are you using webrender or hardware acceleration?
I am using the following settings:

I have since upgraded to FireFox 66, issue persists. I can load reddit (single tab open on firefox) and firefox will use 600MB vram. If I scroll down the feed/page, vram goes up to 1.6GB and then settles around 1.1GB. After some period of time, it may drop down to 600MB again.
Here is the build info. Note that while this is on Gentoo and I have compiled firefox on my own, I can replicate this issue on Arch with their prebuilt binary.
