User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:66.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/66.0

Steps to reproduce:

Everytime I try to send email through Thunderbird from any of my gmail accounts, it fails. There is no problem getting emails. This is a continuous problem for the past several weeks. The server settings are set according to Gmail. I also tried other settings to see if it makes a difference. I have also disabled all add ons. I have no problem sending email from Yahoo or aol accounts. Nothing new has been added to my system.
System information:
Thunderbird version 60.6.1 32 bit
Windows 10 Home ver 10.0.17134 Build 17134

Actual results:

When I try to send an email, it fails, I get the following message.

"Sending of the message failed.
The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again. "

Expected results:

The message should send without any errors.

Please log the SMTP connection and upload the resulting log as an attachment to the bug https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging#Windows

I followed the instructions. I can see a file opening up but it closes immediately. There is no log file saved. Maybe the order in which I'm doing this is incorrect?

Attached file imap.log

I figured out what was wrong. The instructions said to remove the quotation marks from the batch file. When I did that, the imap file was never created. So I put the quote marks back and it worked fine. Attached is the imap file.

Except you need an SMTP log, not an IMAP log. All it will show is Thunderbird trying to ad the thing to the sent fold. IF the send was successful

Attached file SMTP.log

Here is the SMTP log

That log contains a link to https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?p=BadCredentials

That leaves me with a couple of suggestions.

  1. Change the authorization method in the SMTP setting to oAuth.
  2. Make sure your account setting to no violate Googles TOS by checking for mail more frequently than 10 minutes. It should not be necessary with IMAP as Google push new mail out, you don't have to check for it.

Wayne, what is wrong with the error reporting that this is not bubbling up to the error message/dialog. This is the second instance of pertinent information I have seen this week not appearing in the error dialog. That to me is a bug. Should I file one do you think?

Flags: needinfo?(vseerror)

Sorry about that. here is the SMTP log

There is no option for oAuth, just oAuth2

oAuth2 is the authorization I have been using all the time.

Do you mean, why isn't the error dialog more specific than "unknown reason"?

Exactly Wayne.

Vague and partial error messages are just about the worst thing we can offer up when things go wrong. If we can capture it in the log, why can't we be informing the user.

I just set up Outlook with my main gmail account using the same settings I have in Thunderbird and it worked fine.In the past couple of weeks, I have tried different outgoing and server settings settings like using normal password instead of oauth2, with no difference in the result. I don't like using outlook and hate using gmail but until this issue is fixed, I have no choice. Thanks for all your help and hopefully this can be resolved.

Just checking back to see if any progress has been made.

I haven't heard anything in 17 days about my problem. I'm wondering if there is a solution or if I should abandon Thunderbird and use Outlook instead?

Wayne
I haven't heard from you or anyone else in 5 weeks. At this point, I'm guessing Thunderbird doesn't work with Google emails. That being the case, its time for me to move on to another email program that has no issue with Google. Looks like Mailbird is the winner. I wish I would have got some response from your group, even if it wasn't good news.

The solution is for you to fix your login details and settings at gmail. There is no defect in Thunderbird that was demonstrated in your log, just that Gmail was not happy with your log in credentials. So you can conclude whatever you like.

I took your two suggestions from 3/27 about changing to oauth. I have always used oauth2, oauth was not an option. I also changed my time from 10 min to 5 min to check for new mail.I didn't realize there was an issue with login details or settings. What I missed was the link. I thought your suggestions had to do with the link. After your comment yesterday, I went back and checked all login details for the hundredth time. I did find under the outgoing server details, I make a mistake for the user name. What threw me off was "user name" instead of "username". So I put my name in there, not my username. I must have done that when I deleted that email and set it up again. Sorry for the confusion. I am a happy camper now that I can use Thunderbird again. I do think it is a great product, along with Firefox.

Thanks for the update.
