Since I'm a developer for mozilla, one of my blind friends, brought up a suggestion to me, regarding thunderbird. when you go to read a new message, for example, it'll say the subject line, driving cars, unread, well he's asking if we could have our screenreaders, anounce unread, at the beginning of the message, instead of it doing it after reading the subject line. Another words, he wants it to say unread! driving cars!

Component: Build Config → Mail Window Front End
Summary: Improvements for future releases of thunderbird → Provide message status before message subject

Samuel,
Would this change also be attractive to you?

Jean-Philippe, what do you think about this?

Hi,

First, keep in mind that this bug is not a regression. Rather a "wishlist". and as old aas Thunderbird itself.

Next, it is a very interesting request, that I think we should make more general. A blind user, nowawaday, cannot arrange the columns as he wants. The order by default is: attachment, subject, status, From, Date. As displayed like this, the screen reader speaks information in this order. The regular user can change this order via mouse clicking on the top of one column and moving it. A blind user cannot, no way to do it via the keyboard.

So Bob and his friend are right: changing the arrangement of these columns should be accessible. For example, adding the capability to apply such setting in the View (Display) menu jut like we can changing the order of sorting the messages.

Thanks for this very useful report I should have done for a long.

Best regards

In that case, would this request be satisfied by Bug 370437 ? TB: Selecting and reordering columns to display (in message list pane) is not keyboard accessible (need alternative UI or XUL core to make <tree> column picker & headers accessible, like Windows GridView)

Hi,

I did not know this bug. Indeed, it would fix this one. As said ealeier and as you semed to start suggesting, the purpose is not necessarily to make this widget accessible, but to make the feature accessible. So if you are able to enable this ordering of columns via the menu (Display), it would be perfect I think.

Best regards
