Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:67.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/67.0

Steps to reproduce:

I have migrated from Ubuntu 14 to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and installed Thunderbird.

Actual results:

This Thunderbird version (60.7.2 32 bits) on this Ubuntu version has no arrows on the vertical scroll bar to make the scroll of messages easier when there are hundreds of them.

Expected results:

The old version of Thunderbird I had on Ubuntu 14 was easier to scroll the message list so I expected the same triangular arrows at top and bottom but there is just a bar to slide.

The Folder, Thread and Message pane are all missing the arrows on the scrollbars in my Thunderbird's on Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS and Linux Mint 19.1.

What was the old version of Thunderbird you were using on Ubuntu 14?

I really don't know what was the Thunderbird version I were using on Ubuntu 14.
May be Thunderbird are just using the system scroll visual. Ubuntu 16 has no arrows on windows.
I do not remember if Ubuntu 14 had arrows on windows.
As as example, Libre Office 5.1.6.2 does not use the system scroll visual and has arrows on vertical scroll, so it is very easy to use.
Thunderbird is not so easy to use now because it has no arrows on the scroll.

It looks like Thunderbird and my LibreOffice 6.0.7.3 on Ubuntu are using the system scroll visual.

I have no arrows in either.

Have you tried using the keyboard shortcuts for navigating the Thread pane?

Moving between messages

I can navigate with the keyboard arrows but then the selected (navigated) message will become marked as read and I do not want it right now. I just want to navigate through them freely. I think I could only do it well with the scroll arrows as I was doing on Ubuntu 14. I also have no mouse wheel.
Hope someone knows how to put the "magic" scrolling arrows!

Well, you could go to Preferences > Display > Advanced, and change "Automatically mark messages as read", from "Immediately on display", to a time setting in "After displaying for".

Richard, any thoughts on this request for scroll arrows?

The scrolling arrows allowed to scroll the messages list pane line by line without even selecting the message. It was great.
Will be great again on Ubuntu 16?

We use the system widgets and can't change this as we use the shared code from Firefox. If this would be changed, what I doubt, it would be needed to do on the Firefox side.

I close this as WONTFIX because this is the system behaviour of the newer Ubuntu versions.

So I have to conclude that the Ubuntu 16 system widgets are worst than the Ubuntu 14. It is an usability issue I will post on Ubuntu support.
